We flee the heat warnings and high temperatures for the cool breezes of the Oregon Coast, and as we arrive in the old mill town of Toledo we are greeted by a series of smokestacks and empty railroad cars. We pull onto the green at Waterfront Park, situated next to the Yaquina River and estuary, where vans and campers and fellow nomads and their dogs have gathered for the weekend.

Huimos de las advertencias de calor y las altas temperaturas por la brisa fresca de la costa de Oregón, y cuando llegamos a la antigua ciudad industrial de Toledo nos recibe una serie de chimeneas y vagones de ferrocarril vacíos. Nos detenemos en el green en Waterfront Park, situado junto al río Yaquina y el estuario, donde las camionetas, los campistas, los compañeros nómadas y sus perros se han reunido durante el fin de semana.

We settle near the area designated as Center Camp which is marked with speakers, lights, and a wooden bar. We watch attendees arrive, checkin, and then form neat lines along the river. We chat with our new neighbors as they setup camp: moon shades are assembled, rugs are spread out, and folding tables and chairs are placed neatly into picturesque outdoor “living rooms.”

Nos instalamos cerca del área designada como Center Camp que está marcada con parlantes, luces y una barra de madera. Vemos a los asistentes llegar, registrarse y luego formar líneas ordenadas a lo largo del río. As the day turns to night campfires and moonlight illuminate in seemingly equal measure our faces as we engage in deep conversation with friends old and new.

We welcome the new day by joining in a morning yoga before scattering into the nearby towns to visit shops, museums, and for some (like us) the Newport Brewing Company.

We return to camp to find tables of handcrafted goods for sale, a large potluck dinner, and camp chairs being gathered around the impromptu main stage. Mike & Wendy have returned from the Yaquina Oyster Company with a bag of oysters, which are schucked and distributed to current and would-be shellfish fans.

Soon Leroy Firwood takes the stage for a set of standup comedy, and afterwards Joel Chadd’s soulful music warm our spirits as the sun sets coloring the mist and fog above the mill in the distance.

The following morning we wake, make coffee, and walk just a few blocks away to Sekr’s main street cleanup event. A few pause to admire the colorful artwork from Chalk the Block throughout the downtown, drawn by parents and kids on the town’s sidewalks.

Elsewhere tattoo artist Chris Montes is now booked solid for the weekend, and others take kayaking and paddleboarding tours around the estuary. That evening after sunset, tall pours to Timber’s embolden some to try their hand at karaoke before returning to camp to hear Jenner Fox perform followed by fire dancers Sunshine and Axel.

Our final morning we walk over to the Mountain House van for a breakfast of veggie chorizo. Later we meet on the public dock for a free tour on the restored “Yaquina Queen”, a vintage wooden boat carefully maintained by “The Retired Old Guys” of the Toledo Community Boathouse.

That evening we curl up in our blankets to listen to more live music and to watch Sunshine & Axel spin poi, all of us transfixed by their wild turns and flips.

Eventually, the night grows cold, but before climbing into our beds, we glance up one final time at the twinkling stars with our new friends and neighbors.

We wake, reluctant to pack up. Outside we hear the clanging of pots and pans, awnings snapping into place, and see-you-laters shared between travelers. We shuffle our belongings, trade heartfelt goodbyes, and watch the mill fade as we drive east and back towards the heat.

Nos despertamos, reacios a empacar. Afuera escuchamos el sonido de ollas y sartenes, toldos colocándose en su lugar y hasta luego compartidos entre viajeros. Revolvemos nuestras pertenencias, nos despedimos sinceramente y observamos cómo se desvanece el molino mientras nos dirigimos hacia el este y regresamos al calor.
