As I wind south down the 101 crossing into Ventura County I can see the Marine Layer in the distance barreling west into the bright green foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, streaked with patches of bright yellow mustard flowers.

To my left, and ahead and behind me are the vans and vehicles of an informal caravan, each having been in the other’s orbit for the last hour or more. I am eager to see which ones take the Emma Wood Group Camp exit for the BuenaVantura vanlife and overlanding gathering.

Dropping into the fog and under the Ventura Highway we wind out into the long flat fields of the Group Camp sandwiched between the beach and the Amtrak railway to the south, and the highway and mountains to the north.

The next morning we wake for breakfast courtesy of Mountain House, and then walk over to the Ventura Land Trust tent.

Emma Wood Group camp has become something of a restoration success story in recent years due to the efforts of California State Parks and the Ventura Land Trust, and we head down under Ventura Highway bridge over the Ventura River to help bag up garbage.
