Ritual is a useful prelude to a meditative practice. Selecting the perfect stick from a well-aged collection. Making the delicate cut. Gently toasting the foot until it warms into a billowing cloud. And then the lingering draw, the languid exhale and the drifting of thoughts among the swirling smoke.

There is no form of ponderous relaxation that hits me as deeply as the appreciation of a fine cigar. Add the sweet and sticky embrace of the Caribbean climate, the natural lull of the sub-tropical afternoon, or the ubiquitous hypnotism of the music called Son (and even in the rare moments when Cuba is quiet, you can always feel an Afro-latin beat is summoning its potential nearby) and you have the Cuban equivalent of a Buddhist retreat. More self-indulgent, of course, but no less restorative and reflective.

I have never understood why cigar culture hasn’t broken through to the hipster crowd in the same way as say, single malt whisky, craft beer, artisan bread or coffee. It ticks all the boxes: it is a handmade, artisanal product, offers endless potential for discernment and geekery, and for some is the epitome of an occasional, carefully-curated indulgence.

Even the connected politics are fascinating and subversive - the Cuban cigar is part of the iconography of capitalism, yet every purchase directly finances a socialist revolution. The recent ‘industry-disruptor’ business model has arguably been used by Cuba on a macro-economic level for decades.

And for all that, it’s the opportunity to see a country through a specific lens that hooks me the most. For anyone looking to deep-dive into cigar culture a trip to Cuba is a pilgrimage of course, but also an opportunity to see the product outside of the opulence of London clubland or the yacht-strewn harbours of Dubai, and to start to break down that air of exclusivity.

Cigars in Cuba are utilitarian. Among the crumbling streets of Centro Habana old ladies sit on the kerb selling a handful of sticks from a plastic cup. These are puros – usually a simple twist of tobacco from one area, rather than a blend of aged leaves from multiple sources. It is customary in Cuba to remove the branded band of one’s cigar to avoid any perception of snobbery.

And it is away from the bubbling energy of Havana that the untouched magic of cigar culture is revealed in all its striking simplicity, and the pin-striped fat-cat connotations fall away. In the Vuelta Abajo – the areas around the city of Pinar del Rio all the way to Vinales to the north – the plantations abound, verdant above red earth and overshadowed by towering mogotes, as the limestone edifices are known. Ploughs are pulled by beasts of burden and young seedlings are planted by hand in the withering heat.

The entire process of Cuban cigar production remains unmechanised to this day, from seed to smoke. And not because of a romantic attachment to the past, nor for a lack of modernisation in the country. People have experimented with machinery at all stages of production, but it has never yielded a tangible improvement, and in fact has more often been detrimental to a product that is the fiercely protected pride of generations of Cubans.

So too in the drying barns where mostly women select the full-grown leaves and with needle and thread create long green garlands that will completely fill the ceilings of many large buildings, where they are hung to cure.

It is believed that upwards of 200 pairs of hands will touch the leaves that go into a single cigar, and that over 300 individual processes make up the production. Every one of them performed by hand, in traditions and techniques that have barely changed in generations.

This knowledge is part of the meditation, part of the reverence in which every smoke should be held. Burning each bundle of leaf is the culmination of so much. Artisans and scientists. Ancestors and descendants. Earth and water, sun and shade, capitalism and socialism, history and current demands. The expression of all of this through the hands of a few hundred dedicated souls disappears in a puff of smoke. Little wonder it utterly commands your attention as it does so.
