My plane touches down on the small island of Roatán 40 miles off the coast of Central America. Though the island technically belongs to Honduras, its people and culture are entirely distinct from the rest of the country. With a fascinating mix of island cultures and an evident lack of Hispanic influence, Roatán is a unique destination in its own right.

Mi avión aterriza en la pequeña isla de Roatán, a 40 millas de la costa de Centroamérica. Aunque técnicamente la isla pertenece a Honduras, su gente y su cultura son completamente distintas del resto del país. Con una fascinante mezcla de culturas isleñas y una evidente falta de influencia hispana, Roatán es un destino único por derecho propio.

Excited for what’s in store, I deboard the plane and track down my friends in the airport. They’re having a few drinks and waiting for me at Larry & Luey's Fly High Bar.

Our hotel is a quick 20-minute drive from the airport. We check in to the chic Ibagari Boutique Hotel. This place is stunning–I meander around to familiarize myself with the place. Nature itself is entwined in all aspects of the hotel’s design, an incredible collection of artwork completes the space, and through the lobby and out the doors lies the Caribbean Sea.

Nuestro hotel está a 20 minutos en auto desde el aeropuerto. Nos registramos en el elegante Ibagari Boutique Hotel. Este lugar es impresionante; deambulo para familiarizarme con el lugar. La naturaleza misma está entrelazada en todos los aspectos del diseño del hotel, una increíble colección de obras de arte completa el espacio y, a través del lobby y afuera, se encuentra el Mar Caribe.

I drop off my bag in the room and quickly change into my swimsuit. Tonight, we have no plans besides hanging out by the pool. Sitting on the beach, I sip a fruity drink and watch the sunset in a cloudless blue sky.

Dejo mi bolso en la habitación y rápidamente me pongo mi traje de baño. Esta noche no tenemos planes aparte de pasar el rato junto a la piscina. Sentada en la playa, tomo una bebida de frutas y observo la puesta de sol en un cielo azul sin nubes.

The next morning, we grab coffee and a quick breakfast at the hotel and then make our way to a local tour company. We climb into the large catamaran, stocked with food and supplies for a full day at sea. The captain fires up the engine to a dull rumble, and we set sail.

The wind whips strands of my long, blonde hair around my face. On the southern side of the island, we sail eastward towards the Port Royal Gorge and Fort Morgan Cay. Once we arrive at our destination, we don our goggles, snorkels, and flippers, and then tumble awkwardly into the water.

El viento azota mechones de mi largo cabello rubio alrededor de mi cara. En el lado sur de la isla, navegamos hacia el este hacia Port Royal Gorge y Fort Morgan Cay. Una vez que llegamos a nuestro destino, nos ponemos las gafas, el snorkel y las aletas, luego caemos torpemente al agua.

I place my face onto the surface of the water and instantly I’m transported to another world. I inhale deeply and then dive further down to get a closer look. I’m surrounded by colorful coral, schools of intricately designed fish, and many more underwater beings than I could possibly name.

We explore this underwater world for hours, alternating from snorkeling to jumping off the high deck of the boat into the turquoise water. On my turn, I step to the edge of the deck and feel the boat bobbing gently beneath me. My friends look up to me from the water expectantly. Silently, I count to three then bend my knees and launch myself into the air. I feel a deep tickle in my gut, and for a moment, I’m weightless. Before I can even blink, I crash into the water and it’s over. I emerge to the surface with an adrenaline-fueled smile on my face.

Exploramos este mundo submarino durante horas, alternando entre hacer snorkel y saltar desde la cubierta alta del barco al agua turquesa. En mi turno, me acerco al borde de la cubierta y siento el barco balanceándose suavemente debajo de mí. Mis amigos me miran expectantes desde el agua. Back at the hotel, we get cleaned up and then head out for a classy dinner at Gula Gastrobar & Winery. Sipping our wine, we talk excitedly about the days ahead as the water gently laps against the shore.

The next morning, I drive us ten minutes down the road to the West End. We enjoy a delicious breakfast at the Fresh Bakery and then head to the Roatán Marine Park, a community nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of Honduras’s marine and coastal ecosystems. Here, we learn about how we can be responsible visitors while exploring the area.

A la mañana siguiente, conduzco diez minutos por la carretera hasta el West End. Disfrutamos de un delicioso desayuno en Fresh Bakery y luego nos dirigimos al Parque Marino de Roatán, una organización comunitaria sin fines de lucro dedicada a la conservación de los ecosistemas marinos y costeros de Honduras. We sign up with a local diving company for a dive of the West End Wall. We’ve all recently gotten our diving certifications specifically for this trip. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the healthiest and second-largest reef in the world–we want to see as much of it as possible.

The guides reiterate the importance of diving responsibly to prevent causing any harm to the fragile underwater ecosystems. They explain that in this area, there is a massive upwelling of current, which creates an ideal environment for feeding and diving. I simply can’t wait to get in the water.

Our boat captain navigates to the dive spot. We ready ourselves–I check my oxygen tank straps and pull on my goggles and flippers. When I get the go-ahead, I fall backward into the water, like a trust fall into the arms of the ocean.

Suspended and weightless in the water, I swim steadily downward, allowing my ears to equalize as I reach for deeper depths.

It’s impossible to see with our regulators in our mouths, but I can just tell my friends are smiling like I am. We wade through the blue waters, pointing out fanciful creatures to one another as we go. It’s odd feeling the constant pressure of the water on my body in place of the usual force of gravity. I revel in this unusual experience.

Before I know it, it’s time to climb back up to the boat where we can finally use our words to talk about what we just experienced. The conversation flows excitedly as we make our way back to shore.

The next day, we return to the blue underworld for two more dives: Canyon Reef and Bear’s Den. We explore underwater caves and canyons. I swim slowly through walls of rock and coral and spot a sea turtle gliding effortlessly through the water up ahead.

I glide through the beams of “godlight” streaming through the ceiling of the Bear’s Den. Down here, it’s like your life above the water ceases to exist; it’s impossible to do anything but live in the moment.

After our dives, naps, and showers, we grab some delicious baleadas (like small burritos with a thicker tortilla) for dinner and then hit the town to dance the night away at Frank’s and the Booty Bar.

Today, we’re mixing things up. We hop in the car and drive east to the opposite end of the island, taking in scenes of everyday life as we go: concrete homes with brightly-colored chipped paint, corner bodegas piled high with essential goods, kids playing and running around in the alleyways, and people milling about from one place to another. After an hour on the road, we arrive in Jonesville, an old, British fishing village.

Hoy estamos mezclando las cosas. We hail a boat to take us across the bay to the legendary “Hole in the Wall” tiki dive bar, which is only accessible by water. We sit on the dock on the water and enjoy our lunch while the eccentric Captain Ed entertains us with his many stories. We buy him a shot of tequila to thank him for his hospitality before making our way back across the water.

Tomamos un bote que nos llevará a través de la bahía hasta el legendario bar de buceo tiki "Hole in the Wall", al que solo se puede acceder por agua. Next, we head north to the other side of the eastern part of the island to the oldest permanent settlement in Roatán. Punta Gorda is a haven of rich culture, distinct from the rest of the island. It was founded in 1797 by some 3,000 Carib slaves, called the Garifuna, who were exiled by the British after a series of revolts. We explore the area and check out the Garifuna Cultural Center.

Luego, nos dirigimos hacia el norte, al otro lado de la parte oriental de la isla, hacia el asentamiento permanente más antiguo de Roatán. Punta Gorda es un paraíso de rica cultura, distinto del resto de la isla. For dinner, we post up at a restaurant on the beach and order the Garifuna specialty, machuca. We watch the horizon fade to orange, pink, and a deeper blue as we savor this incredible dish made from a combination of coconut milk, local fish, shrimp, spiney lobster, crab, and breaded plantains.

Para cenar, nos detenemos en un restaurante en la playa y pedimos la especialidad garífuna, machuca. Vemos cómo el horizonte se vuelve naranja, rosa y un azul más intenso mientras saboreamos este increíble plato elaborado con una combinación de leche de coco, pescado local, camarones, langosta, cangrejo y plátanos empanizados.

Sadly, today is our last full day on the island. After a morning dive, we make our way to the Charmont Bilingual Academy. Here the Roatán Peer Health Exchange provides afterschool classes for the local youth. We donate some portable solar lights and spend the afternoon chatting with the kids about sexual health.

Lamentablemente, hoy es nuestro último día completo en la isla. Después de una inmersión matutina, nos dirigimos a la Academia Bilingüe Charmont. Aquí, el Intercambio de Salud entre Pares de Roatán ofrece clases extraescolares para los jóvenes locales.
