Place matters. The place you inhabit affects your life much more than you realize. Place is what we have in common.

El lugar importa. El lugar que habitas afecta tu vida mucho más de lo que crees. El lugar es lo que tenemos en común.

The surfing community of Thy, Denmark, a 70 km coastal stretch along the North Atlantic coast of the Danish peninsula Jutland, is uniquely open-minded and diverse. Welcoming across ages, nationalities and styles of surfing, the group is also close-knit. Surfers get to know each other well over time and news of incoming swells and tales of memorable surf sessions are shared and celebrated.

La comunidad de surfistas de Thy, Dinamarca, un tramo costero de 70 km a lo largo de la costa del Atlántico norte de la península danesa de Jutlandia, es singularmente diversa y de mentalidad abierta. El grupo, que acoge a personas de todas las edades, nacionalidades y estilos de surf, también está muy unido. Los surfistas se conocen bien con el tiempo y se comparten y celebran las noticias sobre las olas entrantes y las historias de sesiones de surf memorables.

This sense of place is amplified because in surfing nature and the waves are in charge. You can’t just go surfing when you want to, or when it fits into your schedule. The wave comes when it wants to, and it’s up to you to be there when it does.

Esta sensación de pertenencia se amplifica porque en el surf la naturaleza y las olas mandan. No puedes simplemente navegar cuando quieras o cuando se ajuste a tu agenda. La ola llega cuando quiere y depende de ti estar ahí cuando lo haga.

Cold water surfers began arriving in Thy from afar some 20 years ago. In recent years the coastline has become known as Cold Hawaii with its 31 registered surf spots. In a rural area otherwise affected by depopulation as a result of growing urbanisation, the surfers first came here to visit in the 1980’es. Many made the transition and settled for good and today the pattern repeats itself.

Los surfistas de aguas frías empezaron a llegar a Thy desde lejos hace unos 20 años. En los últimos años, la costa se ha conocido como Cold Hawaii con sus 31 puntos de surf registrados. En una zona rural afectada por la despoblación debido a la creciente urbanización, los surfistas vinieron aquí por primera vez en los años 1980. Muchos hicieron la transición y se conformaron definitivamente y hoy el patrón se repite.

Known in historic times as “The Iron Coast”, here the ocean is fierce and cold. Every family in the coastal villages has stories of family members who lost their lives to the ocean. To them, the ocean is a workplace, a place associated with basic survival, not a setting for play. In modern day Thy the surfers have become locals, and a new kind of connection with the ocean has emerged.

Conocida en tiempos históricos como “La Costa de Hierro”, aquí el océano es feroz y frío. Cada familia de los pueblos costeros tiene historias de miembros de la familia que perdieron la vida en el océano. Para ellos, el océano es un lugar de trabajo, un lugar asociado con la supervivencia básica, no un escenario para jugar. En la actualidad, los surfistas se han convertido en locales y ha surgido un nuevo tipo de conexión con el océano.

I try to portray Thy and the community around surfing in a manner that feels true to my experience, and analogue photography is well-suited for the materiality of nature. I find that the landscape around here has a texture best captured on film. I’ve endeavour to catch the light, the atmosphere, the emotions, and the experience of being on the water.

Intento retratar a Thy y a la comunidad en torno al surf de una manera que se sienta fiel a mi experiencia, y la fotografía analógica se adapta bien a la materialidad de la naturaleza. Creo que el paisaje de por aquí tiene una textura que se captura mejor en una película. Me he esforzado por captar la luz, la atmósfera, las emociones y la experiencia de estar en el agua.

As soon as the board hits the water I am transported into another reality. Something happens to time: it slows down or recedes altogether, and other concerns disappear. You can’t be anything else or anywhere else. The sea demands 100% of your presence.

Tan pronto como la tabla toca el agua, me transporto a otra realidad. Algo le sucede al tiempo: se ralentiza o retrocede por completo y otras preocupaciones desaparecen. No puedes ser otra cosa ni ningún otro lugar. El mar exige el 100% de tu presencia.

Photography and surfing are similar in this way. Analogue photography is a physical craft. It’s uncompromising. You have to pay attention and dare to take chances. You have to mean it. And then once in a while, everything comes together.

La fotografía y el surf son similares en este sentido. La fotografía analógica es un arte físico. Es intransigente. Hay que prestar atención y atreverse a correr riesgos. Tienes que decirlo en serio. Y luego, de vez en cuando, todo se junta.

The water is a fantastic shared reference. The surfing community here spends an inordinate amount of time talking about surfing compared to the few seconds the wave lasts. There’s always something to talk to each other about. Something we’re looking forward to, or a wave that was just there.

El agua es una fantástica referencia compartida. La comunidad de surfistas aquí dedica una cantidad excesiva de tiempo a hablar sobre el surf en comparación con los pocos segundos que dura la ola. Siempre hay algo de qué hablar. Algo que estamos esperando con ansias, o una ola que simplemente estuvo ahí.

The people in this community are invaluable to me. I, and my family, have formed deep connections to the people here, and our children are now growing up surrounded by surfing and nature. These things will be part of their future. We’ve merged with the place in that way.

La gente de esta comunidad es invaluable para mí. Mi familia y yo hemos formado conexiones profundas con la gente de aquí, y nuestros hijos ahora crecen rodeados del surf y la naturaleza. Estas cosas serán parte de su futuro. Nos hemos fusionado con el lugar de esa manera.

The book, “No Place Like Home”, is dedicated to Thy and to the people who live here. I have a dream that non-surfers too will be able to see that the pictures are a tribute to their place. That they’ll find joy in the fact that this is their local area depicted from the vantage point of the water: Hanstholm, Vigsø, Agger.
