Traditional hunting customs and Globalization with the Inughuit people of Northern Greenland

Upon arrival in Qaanaaq, Greenland (77° N) we are ushered into a small boat. It is loaded with black plastic bags and tubs filled and food and supplies, and is packed to the brim with people: a hunting family of six, the filmmaker Ashlei Payne, and myself.

Soon we are speeding north, weaving between icebergs the size of buildings that shine bright in the midnight sun.

With no common language between the family and us we are unaware of our next destination or how long we will be gone. Our objective is to hunt and gather food for the coming winter, and Ashlei and I are completely in the care of the family, trusting in their deep, generational wisdom of the land, the sea, and of subsistence hunting.

In short order we spot our first seal (puisi). A shot is fired. It's a miss. Better luck next time.

Along the way we see thousands of small sea birds fluttering across the water. The Little Auk have arrived for breeding season in the largest colony in the world (pop. 33 million) and we head towards their nesting cliffs just across the fjord from the northernmost indigenous village on Earth - Siorapaluk (pop. 43).

The cliffs here have been a home to Auk for over 4,000 years, and the hut at the base has been a shelter to countless hunting families who've chased the seasonal, traditional Greenlandic food sources. Ashlei and I pitch our NEMO tent next to the hut - the contrast is stark.

It is 1am but time doesn't matter in the land of the midnight sun. Huge butterfly nets (ipoqs) are produced and we scramble up the cliffs.

The sound of beatings wings is constant, broken only by the occasional whoosh of the ipoq striking its target. A bird is caught and quickly pulled in. Its wings are broken and its heart crushed in one swift, violent motion and its still pulsing body is added to a clear plastic bag. The act is precise and seemingly effortless, the result of a lifetime of practice. It is repeated 73 more times before we call it a night.

Hours later as we sit together picking meat from tiny bones, we share a common North Greenlandic (Inughuit) meal. It tastes like duck and is served on paper plates with a side of Kool-Aid.

Our host family wears cotton hoodies, a Mickey Mouse shirt, and a dress covered in Disney’s Frozen characters while the father sports his signature USAF ball cap. It is both familiar and foreign - if you ignored the feathers you could be at any cookout in the Western world.

I have spent years of my life working on a Ph.D. and developing an acute understanding of the process of globalization - particularly the negative impacts it can have on remote communities.

But globalization also means opportunity. Younger generations are afforded opportunities that were previously impossible. The children I spent the summer hunting with now have the chance to choose their own path into the future whether that means remaining in the subsistence hunting lifestyle of their parents or heading off to a university far away in Nuuk or Denmark to pursue a different dream.

Pero la globalización también significa oportunidad. Las generaciones más jóvenes tienen oportunidades que antes eran imposibles. In North Greenland, the endless possibilities of a global world and the rich traditions of a hunting community can coexist. The chance to choose a different future doesn’t have to come at the cost of their culture. Instead, globalization offers a broadening of horizons beyond the the icy borders of their homeland.

In the far North the presence of the world is felt through cans of Coca Cola, but the soul of the community remains connected to customs and traditions stretching back eons.
