The fall colors and landscape of Missoula, Montana provide a dramatic setting for four friends to spend a weekend hiking, fly fishing, and exploring one of the Last Best Places.

As we drive through the early autumn light toward Missoula, Montana, we wind through steep canyons carved into the Rocky Mountains by rivers of ice and water. Yellow and orange splashes of colors ring the lower elevations in the first blush of fall, and we enter a wide valley where we get our first glimpse of the town whose name is taken from the Salish word “Nemissoolatakoo”, which translates to "river of ambush.”

We arrive downtown, park, and begin exploring on foot. People meander in and out of numerous shops and eateries, and we walk through Carras Park under the changing leaves. The park is bordered on one side by the Clark Fork River, which joins the Bitterroot River just downstream, and is itself joined by the Blackfoot River on the east end of town.

We relax and breathe quietly in the stillness, as time passes marked only by the rising sun and warming air. As it brightens we begin talking and laughing, and the world feels alive.

After Ashley and Eric load up their boat and Alexus and Breanna pack up our camp gear, we set out along the dirt road that flanks the western shore of the lake before arriving at the Holland Falls trailhead.

With each gain in elevation, more of the area’s trademark vibrant autumn hues are revealed. Soon we reach a vista with expansive views of the lake, the forest, and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. Far below, the fog now burned off in the morning sun, we can make out the route we took while paddling on the lake, which is now wrapped in the bright gold of the changing trees.

Upon returning to the cars, we check our watches and though it doesn’t feel as if much time has passed we have been in the woods for hours.

Our plan is to find a good spot to watch the sunset, but we figure there’s enough time to grab a quick bite prior and we visit the Chicken Coop, a Seely Lake locals eatery. We each enjoy variations of fried chicken and grilled cheeses, and the warm comfort food hits the spot.
After the meal, we grab a couple of six packs from Kettlehouse and Waterworks to go and hit the road in search of a good campfire spot. Several dusty, bumpy, twisty, miles up a steep forest road later, we finally burst out of the tree cover and the whole valley breaks open below us.

After an hour in the sky, we return to earth to meet up with the rest of the crew for an excursion on horseback at Dunrovin Ranch We’re warmly welcomed by our guide and introduced to the horses.

The following morning we meet our fishing guide James, at “six dark-thirty” (his words).
