I sit at a quaint little bar, surrounded by a small group of friends at a local Sinister Deluxe Distillery, a Harvest Hosts location where we’re gathering before the start of Holy Toledo! This year’s event promises to be loaded with epic local sea-food from Ocean Seafare, live music, and the opportunity to see friends we haven’t seen in months.

Me siento en un pequeño y pintoresco bar, rodeado por un pequeño grupo de amigos en una Sinister Deluxe Distillery local, un lugar de Harvest Hosts donde nos reunimos antes del comienzo de Holy Toledo. After a few tasty samplings at the distillery’s bar, we decide to head to the coast as a group and camp together.

Just off the Yaquina River, Toledo is a modest sleepy fishing and mill town. As we pull into the Port of Toledo, loggers compile enormous heaps of massive tree trunks, filling my senses with the woodsy forest, despite being inside the middle of town. As promised, the park is filling quickly for the sold out event. Sticking closely together, we park just along the water's edge.

It’s always fun to meet your new neighbors and get tours of different rigs, like Valerie of Four Wheel Campers who is showing off her custom Four Wheel Camper. Nearby, Overland Van Project also has a brand new, sleek Mercedes van on loan to Chris Montes, who cleverly integrated her tattoo studio within.

Siempre es divertido conocer a tus nuevos vecinos y realizar recorridos por diferentes plataformas, como Valerie de Four Wheel Campers, que muestra su Four Wheel Camper personalizada. Cerca de allí, Overland Van Project también tiene una nueva y elegante camioneta Mercedes prestada a Chris Montes, quien hábilmente integró su estudio de tatuajes.

I mosey further along the procession of nomadic homes… vanlifers, buses, box trucks, RVs, campers and even a few cars and SUVs with tents. I pass numerous artists, vendors, and craftsmen, hawking their wares and services. Buslife Kitchen is dispensing morsels of samples from their cookbook. CedarCreature is offering custom flash art tattoos and stickers. Angie’s shuttle bus, MoonDreamsFest, is busy giving stylish haircuts with scalp massages. I even met a traveling mechanic, buzzing around, giving consultations to all who may need assistance or advice.

Sigo avanzando por la procesión de hogares nómadas... furgonetas, autobuses, furgones, vehículos recreativos, caravanas e incluso algunos coches y todoterrenos con tiendas de campaña. Friday morning kicks off with a variety of events to choose from, everything from group workouts, live oyster shucking demos, and ice baths with instructor Brittany Lillegard.

The highlight of Fridays sessions was an extremely informative live discussion panel about Making Money on the Road lead by Chad of Life on the Road, and featuring Chad of LivingTheVanlife, Chris of Studio Montes, Brian of Wuzabus Conversions, Christin Whetten from ONX Maps, and Samantha Peck from DryFox.

Friday evening, I started the night on the Orion Vans’ sunset lounge rooftop deck, providing me with spectacular seats to watch the sunset while Joel Chadd kicks off the live music on the Wazabus stage.

Just as I was heading off to bed for the night, a surprise visit from the exceptionally talented Daniel Park, giving Wazabus the perfect opportunity to show off its new lighting & laser setup, powered by 2000 amp hours of Dakota Lithium batteries. Soon the entire crowd was up and dancing, as was I.

The following morning, I wake early to the stillness of the misty morning light to join the Oregon Seaweed and Shifting Tides on a mussel foraging workshop at the local estuary, followed by an informative shellfish and seaweed cooking demo. Of course, to my delight, both offered the opportunity to try free samples of their locally harvested bounty.

In the middle of the afternoon, I venture back to the stage to watch the “Van Olympics''. This is a hilarious event where teams compete to see, who is the best vanlifer? Continuing the laughs was Leroy Firwoods Comedy Hour, whose personal buslife comedy uniquely hits home to nomads. Later, Mountain House hands out walking frito pies and Go Power! offers sweet frozen treats to cool us down from the warm summer sun.

A media tarde, me aventuro de nuevo al escenario para ver las “Olimpiadas de furgonetas”. Este es un evento divertido donde los equipos compiten para ver quién es el mejor vanlifer. Saturday evening, the cutest bluegrass trio, The Sugar Sweet String Band took the stage, bringing a timeless folksy ambiance. Continuing the entertainment, I am captivated by another surprise visit by Daniel Park, who invited anyone in the crowd to join on stage. He was joined by several nomads in the crowd, playing a variety of instruments, like Isaac on the bass, Dr. Ben on the harmonica, and Brian from Wazabus on the tambourine.

El sábado por la noche, el trío de bluegrass más lindo, The Sugar Sweet String Band, subió al escenario, brindando un ambiente folklórico atemporal. Continuando con el entretenimiento, quedo cautivado por otra visita sorpresa de Daniel Park, quien invitó a todos los presentes a subir al escenario. Sunday promises more scheduled events, such as breathwork with Brittany @breathworkcaravan and a sea veggie discussion. However, I really want to spend these last moments with my new friends. With the river at my backdoor all weekend, I can’t resist an opportunity to get out on the water with friends. A group of us take out our paddle boards and head for a lazy float down the river. We make it back just in time for the most spectacular fresh salmon tacos by Wildflower Kitchen.

El domingo promete más eventos programados, como trabajo de respiración con Brittany @breathworkcaravan y una discusión sobre vegetales marinos. Sin embargo, tengo muchas ganas de pasar estos últimos momentos con mis nuevos amigos. Wrapping up the weekend events, I gather on the grassy lawn, a blanket wrapped around me, and sit with my new friends to enjoy The Lost Film Festival by Storyteller Overland. As we intimately watch videos and listen to stories of nomads, together, we laugh at the amusing, weep for the tragedies, and celebrate our accomplishments. Finishing the weekend strong with the final bit of entertainment, I watch my friends joyously belch out open mic karaoke! There is nothing like singing a Celine Dion song with a group of newly made friends; a moment I will truly cherish.

Concluyendo los eventos del fin de semana, me reúno en el césped, envuelto en una manta, y me siento con mis nuevos amigos para disfrutar The Lost Film Festival de Storyteller Overland. Mientras miramos videos íntimamente y escuchamos historias de nómadas, juntos, nos reímos de lo divertido, lloramos por las tragedias y celebramos nuestros logros. Terminando el fin de semana fuerte con el último entretenimiento, veo a mis amigos eructar alegremente en un karaoke con micrófono abierto. No hay nada como cantar una canción de Celine Dion con un grupo de amigos recién hechos; un momento que realmente apreciaré.

Monday morning arrives too early. The chaos of balancing packing my things and making sure I get to say goodbye to everyone has begun. Instagram handles and phone numbers are being passed around, plans of next meetings are being made, and caravans are forming as we all depart. I wish everyone safe travels and start making plans for my next caravan.

El lunes por la mañana llega demasiado temprano. El caos de equilibrar empacar mis cosas y asegurarme de poder despedirme de todos ha comenzado.
