I lead the way in my self-converted ‘08 Ford E350, Memphis, down the 1200 miles from Oregon to New Mexico with a caravan of travelers. Amongst us are an eclectic nomad group of eight vans, two trucks with Four Wheel Camper on their, two camper trailers, two school busses aka “Skoolies”, a teardrop camper, and one man living in a teepee.

Lidero el camino en mi Ford E350 2008 autoconvertido, Memphis, por las 1200 millas desde Oregón hasta Nuevo México con una caravana de viajeros. We are all heading to Moonlanding II, an overlanding, vanlife, and nomad gathering at the beautiful Sky View Park in Ramah, New Mexico.

Looking like ducks in a row, our caravan arrives at the entrance, and we slowly make our way up the windy dirt road, following markings leading us up the mesa to camp.

Nuestra caravana, que parece patos en fila, llega a la entrada y lentamente avanzamos por el sinuoso camino de tierra, siguiendo las marcas que nos llevan a la mesa hasta acampar.

Familiar faces greet me and direct us to a spectacular campsite. I open my van doors to find myself on the cliff’s edge of the mesa overlooking a wide valley of untouched Navajo Diné land below leading to the towering El Morro National Monument directly across from me.

That evening, we make camp and have dinner as a family while enjoying the multitude of stars above. Positioned beside a Dark Sky Park, zero lights pollute the sky, and we are in the perfect location for stargazing.

Friday morning, I wake to find myself surrounded by hundreds of new and old friends. I quickly grab a breakfast burrito provided by Featherbuilt and go to my first hand-poke tattoo, a moon symbol artfully crafted by the talented Abi Rodriguez to memorialize this special event.

El viernes por la mañana, me despierto y me encuentro rodeado de cientos de viejos y nuevos amigos. All afternoon I try to balance meeting new people and attending as many of the demos as possible. Mike Ladden from @drivetheglobe does a solar demo for GO Power! featuring his mammoth orange overlanding Unimog, Boabad. Chuck Cassady and Regretlyss speak about a new portable solar option with Anker’s new Solix F3800. CompoCloset does a potty talk complete with a selfie option to take a photo with one of their potties.

Toda la tarde trato de equilibrar conocer gente nueva y asistir a tantas demostraciones como sea posible. ¡Mike Ladden de @drivetheglobe hace una demostración solar de GO Power! con su gigantesco Unimog naranja sobrevolando Boabad. As happy hour approaches, Nikle Co Spirits starts the party with a free tasting. Then Vanlife Pride and VanlifeDiaries kick things up a notch with the Cheers Queers Social Hour.

Nightfall approaches, I throw on my space costume for the contest, and make my way to Center Camp to watch the traditional moon rise. As I enjoy roasting s’mores provided by XPLOR, I watch a giant hand-painted inflatable moon rise high above the stage and dance in the breeze as @fuzzyyip and Ph8 w/the Bees & Locusts rock the stage. I commemorate the evening with an adorable 5x7 photo keepsake of myself and my friends all dressed in our silly spacesuits thanks to Sari of The Wandering Portrait Bus.

Se acerca el anochecer, me pongo mi traje espacial para el concurso y me dirijo al Campamento Central para ver la tradicional salida de la luna. Mientras disfruto asando s'mores proporcionados por XPLOR, observo una luna inflable gigante pintada a mano elevarse por encima del escenario y bailar con la brisa mientras @fuzzyyip y Ph8 con Bees & Locusts sacuden el escenario. Saturday morning I rise to the excitement of the upcoming annular “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse. I scarf down a delicious biscuit and gravy brunch provided by Peter and Christine with Storyteller Overland and Tembo Tusk. I then enjoyed a cleansing Rise & Flow yoga session with Shami of Nomadic Bodyworx.

El sábado por la mañana me levanto con la emoción del próximo eclipse solar anular del “Anillo de Fuego”. Devoro un delicioso brunch de galletas y salsa servido por Peter y Christine con Storyteller Overland y Tembo Tusk. Luego disfruté de una sesión de limpieza de yoga Rise & Flow con Shami de Nomadic Bodyworx.

I sit on my yoga mat, breathing and stretching in the bright New Mexico sun, a shadow begins to creep over us. The temperature takes a noticeable plunge and I’m forced to add layers as the moon begins to take over the sun slowly. I am thankful for the eclipse glasses provided by Moon for the viewing party. However, for a closer view, astronomer Tim Pickering from the MMT Observatory is standing by with his telescope and answering questions. Just before the sun is fully enveloped, our shadows become fuzzy on the ground. I laugh with my friends as we try to make fuzzy finger puppets in the sand.

Me siento en mi estera de yoga, respiro y me estiro bajo el brillante sol de Nuevo México, una sombra comienza a arrastrarse sobre nosotros. La temperatura cae notablemente y me veo obligado a agregar capas a medida que la luna comienza a apoderarse del sol lentamente. Estoy agradecido por las gafas de eclipse proporcionadas por Moon para la fiesta de observación. Before I know it, the eclipse is over and it is time to get back to the event activities. Jerry from TemboTusk & Mike from @drivetheglobe show off the power of the Skottle by cooking up a wonderful pineapple and sticky rice for the crowd. I grab a sample and my chair to scope out a great spot to watch the Nomad OverVanTathlon.

Sir William & Shamwoah do a wonderful job hosting the games featuring a BF Goodwich tire carrying, tow-strap pulling, joint-rolling, and other funny games showcasing the skills for nomadic life like having the contestants race to the Clothing Swap hosted by Val at the Dakota Lithium truck to pick out the best in nomad fashion for a hysterical fashion show.

Sir William y Shamwoah hacen un trabajo maravilloso organizando los juegos en los que se presenta un BF Goodwich que transporta llantas, tira de correas de remolque, enrolla porros y otros juegos divertidos que muestran las habilidades para la vida nómada, como hacer que los concursantes corran hacia el intercambio de ropa organizado por Val en el camión Dakota Lithium para seleccionar lo mejor de la moda nómada para un desfile histérico.

At happy hour, ICECO comes by with a cool beverage and teaches us the science behind ICECO’s cooling systems. They even send their repair team out help to fix people’s fridges and freezers. Then Four Wheel Campers does a vast taco spread with the help of Jason of Overland Cookery using all New Mexico-raised beef with local herbs.

En la hora feliz, ICECO viene con una bebida fría y nos enseña la ciencia detrás de los sistemas de enfriamiento de ICECO. Just as the chill of the night air begins to seep in while we are watching The Nomad Comedy Hour, hosted by Leroy Firwood and hilarious Navajo local Josh Fournier, Anker drops by with a hot cocoa. Continuing to heat things up, the Foggy Memory Boys, one of New Mexico’s favorite Bluegrass bands gets me on my feet. I continue to dance late into the night with DJ sets by The Fungi Phunk and Amanita.

Justo cuando el frío del aire nocturno comienza a filtrarse mientras miramos The Nomad Comedy Hour, presentado por Leroy Firwood y el divertido local navajo Josh Fournier, Anker llega con un chocolate caliente. Having stayed out so late the night before, Sunday starts slowly with active meditation and breathwork led by Jana. While there are various other workshops on the schedule today, such as herbal consultations, woodworking, and even a chapel service, I take a bit of time to just roam around and spend valuable time with my friends and community. Everyone is talking about the upcoming raffle.

Después de haber estado fuera hasta tan tarde la noche anterior, el domingo comienza lentamente con meditación activa y respiración dirigida por Jana. Si bien hoy hay varios otros talleres programados, como consultas sobre hierbas, carpintería e incluso un servicio de capilla, me tomo un poco de tiempo para deambular y pasar tiempo valioso con mis amigos y mi comunidad. Todos hablan del próximo sorteo.

All weekend raffle tickets have been being sold to raise funds for the local Ramah Navajo School District. The grand prize promises a plethora of nomad gear such as a new set of BF Goodrich tires, an Orion Van Gear Roof Rack, a three-year membership to Harvest Host, and many more amazing items for only $1 per ticket. As wonderful as the prizes are and despite my disappointment that I did not win, my heart is full knowing I gave what I could to the cause which raised $2500 for the local children.

Se han vendido todos los boletos para la rifa del fin de semana para recaudar fondos para el distrito escolar local de Ramah Navajo. As soon as the raffle ends, the demos start right back up in full swing, starting with a woman’s self-defense course taught by holistic health coach, Jennifer Ismar who teaches us several techniques to stay safe on the road. After the hands-on demonstration in the sun, I am grateful to gather in the shade and sit and listen to local Navajo historian, Mr. Nixon Martinez describe the rich history of the land we are currently occupying and the stories of his ancestors.

Tan pronto como finaliza el sorteo, las demostraciones comienzan de nuevo a todo trapo, comenzando con un curso de defensa personal para mujeres impartido por la coach de salud holística, Jennifer Ismar, quien nos enseña varias técnicas para mantenernos seguras en la carretera. Sunday evening the mood hangs heavy with the knowledge that soon our weekend will be ending. I gather with my closest friends around Center Camp one last time and settle in for the extraordinary talents of open mic night. Our night closes with one last Storyteller Overland happy hour and production of The Lost Films Festival, a movie night promoting the unique works of the nomad community.

El domingo por la tarde el ánimo está pesado porque sabemos que nuestro fin de semana pronto terminará. Me reúno con mis amigos más cercanos en Center Camp por última vez y me siento cómodo con los extraordinarios talentos de la noche de micrófono abierto. Nuestra noche cierra con una última hora feliz de Storyteller Overland y la producción de The Lost Films Festival, una noche de cine que promueve las obras únicas de la comunidad nómada.

Monday morning arrives too soon. I gather my belongings and make the van ready for departure. Before heading out, I stroll around the mesa, breathing in the brisk air, and say one last goodbye to my Moonlanding family.
