We plunge along the trail between Douglas fir and Sitka spuce. The ferns are a green blur beside our tires.

The canopy of evergreens above us protects the living forest below from the heat. The network of mountain biking trails here at Silver Falls expands every year—there’s always a new corner to tackle.

Then he suggests a drink at Crosby Hop Farm. The brewers have built a beer garden amid the hop trellises, called Topwire. Hard to resist a pint of IPA when you’re standing where it grew.

Do you know that feeling you get sometimes at sunset, when you’re with people you love and you know that whatever happens next, you were lucky to have this moment? I get that feeling a lot here.
