Day 1: Taylor Road

Our plane touches down in the small town of Nome located on the Seward Peninsula in Northwestern Alaska. We wait over an hour for our bags, probably due to the fact that the 737 was packed full of birders arriving for the annual bird migration.

Bags in hand, we rush to find a cab to get us to our truck rental. In Nome there is only one shuttle which makes its rounds through the few blocks that makeup the downtown.

The driver hurriedly throws our bags into the trunk and loads up, packing us tightly into a van along with two of her young kids who she had just picked up from school. After retrieving our truck and stocking up on water which somehow costs twice as much as fuel, we head out of town via the Taylor road.

Con las maletas en la mano, nos apresuramos a encontrar un taxi que nos lleve a nuestro camión de alquiler. En Nome solo hay un servicio de transporte que recorre las pocas cuadras que conforman el centro de la ciudad.

El conductor rápidamente arroja nuestras maletas en el maletero y carga, metiéndonos apretadamente en una camioneta junto con dos de sus hijos pequeños que acababa de recoger de la escuela. Después de recuperar nuestro camión y abastecernos de agua, que de alguna manera cuesta el doble que el combustible, salimos de la ciudad por la Carretera Taylor.

Our objective is to photograph the formerly extinct Alaskan Muskox population, which was reintroduced to the area from Greenland in the 1930s.

Though they share similarities to the American Bison, the Muskox, or ‘Oomingmak’ which means ‘the bearded ones’ is actually more closely related to sheep and goats. Muskoxen have two coats - the outer guard hair, and the soft under-wool which is known as qiviut, esteemed for its rare qualities when woven into thread.

Aunque comparten similitudes con el bisonte americano, el buey almizclero o 'Oomingmak', que significa 'los barbudos', en realidad está más estrechamente relacionado con las ovejas y las cabras. Although we don’t immediately find a Muskox herd on day one, we do come across some of the incredible migratory bird species. Joey, our local bird expert, urgently commands us to stop the car as a long-tailed jaeger flies overhead - an agile gull-sized bird known for its parasitic tendency to snatch prey from other birds. While Kris and I join him in photographing this bird in its various acrobatic maneuvers, my brother Herman watches the red-necked phalaropes in the nearby lake through his binoculars.

Aunque no encontramos inmediatamente una manada de bueyes almizcleros el primer día, sí nos encontramos con algunas de las increíbles especies de aves migratorias. We make camp alongside a vast, ice-covered lake high in the mountains, and we make a dinner of beef stroganoff. The combination of the cold and the local willow ptarmigan squawking right outside our camp made sleep difficult, so we wake early and set out in the twilight to wait, grateful for our lights.

Acampamos junto a un gran lago cubierto de hielo en lo alto de las montañas, y preparamos una cena de ternera strogonoff. La combinación del frío y la perdiz nival local que graznaba justo fuera de nuestro campamento dificultaba el sueño.

Day 2: Council Road

The next day we set out on Council Road, and we quickly spot a large Muskox herd with multiple calves bedding down.

The herd, accustomed to the traffic of locals, doesn’t seem to mind our vehicle - but as soon as we emerge from the car to get a closer look, the two bulls immediately spring up and give us a cold stares and make several large exhales.

A la manada, acostumbrada al tráfico de lugareños, no parece importarle nuestro vehículo, pero tan pronto como salimos del auto para verlo más de cerca, los dos toros saltan de inmediato y nos dan una mirada fría y hacen varias grandes exhalaciones.

Muskoxen are known to be particularly aggressive during calving season, so we back off and let them relax. After watching them calmly get up and move around, we observe the calves nursing and playing with one another.

As we watch and laugh, we realize that we are surrounded by the soft qiviut fur which the muskoxen had rubbed onto the bushes around us. Herman stuffs his pockets with prized fur to give to his wife as a souvenir.

As the sun rises high we struggle to get close enough to get any photos through the harsh heat distortion coming off the grass in between us and the herd.

Betting we will find another herd, we leave the creatures in peace, and continue our drive along the coast of the Seward Peninsula. The biodiversity during the spring migration is overwhelming; we spot red-throated & pacific loons, common eiders, arctic terns, and short-eared owls on all sides of us.

Apostando a que encontraremos otra manada, dejamos a las criaturas en paz y continuamos nuestro viaje a lo largo de la costa de la península de Seward. La biodiversidad durante la migración de primavera es abrumadora; vemos colimbos de garganta roja y pacíficos, eiders comunes, charranes árticos y búhos chico en todos nuestros lados.

Day 3: Teller Road

Eager to find more wildlife the next morning we set off along Teller Road. Fortunately for us the “golden hour” light of the early morning lasts much longer this close to the Arctic Circle, as the sun dips below the horizon only briefly on a summer night.

Our efforts are rewarded when we find another muskox herd on top of a hill in perfect light. This time we circle around them, out of sight, in order to get a better angle.

While the rest of the crew stays a safe distance, I slowly crawl closer towards the herd, perhaps overly eager to photograph an isolated female close by. She turns and gives me a passionate stare - her backlit fur flowing from her silhouetted figure. It feels as if she is looking at me for ten minutes. Not wanting to push my luck, I stay low as I slowly back away.

Mientras el resto del equipo se mantiene a una distancia segura, me arrastro lentamente hacia la manada, tal vez demasiado ansioso por fotografiar a una hembra aislada cerca. Later that afternoon we spot a wolverine crossing a snow patch not far off the highway. These large elusive weasels can have ranges up to 600 miles, so it is rare for anyone to see one let alone capture it on camera.

As our journey draws to a close, I try to wrap my head around our good fortune and the density of wildlife surrounding Nome. Aside from a few abandoned gold dredges around town, this land feels untouched - a rare sight even in Alaska in this modern age.
