The pre-dawn rain beats heavy on the windshield as our caravan pulls into queue to board the MV Northern Expedition for the 500 kilometer, 15 hour voyage south along the Inside Passage from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy.

Lights dot the foggy harbor of Prince Rupert, and we are eventually summoned into the belly of the 8,000+ ton vessel where we can hear the loud hum of her enormous engines. I march up several flights of stairs to find the cafe, coffee, and a corner of the ship with tables and a view.

The Inside Passage extends from southeastern Alaska all the way to Seattle, Washington, connecting numerous isolated communities while providing some protection from inclement weather following a route “inside” the thousands of islands and the mainland.

Dan & Colton renew their cribbage rivalry, and soon we feel the vessel begin to vibrate as it pulls away from shore. I secure a coffee from the the Canoe Cafe, and set out explore the ship's six decks.

Despite being enormous, the MV Northern Expedition is remarkably quiet. Indigenous artwork is featured along its hallways and staterooms, celebrating the region’s original explorers and settlers. Outside we pass enormous cargo ships unloading in the pre-dawn light. Later that morning we head outside onto the top viewing area and are immediately battered by joyously strong winds.
A pesar de ser enorme, el MV Northern Expedition es notablemente silencioso. We laugh and take turns leaning into it, nearly falling over. Mountains and waterfalls and fog are in every direction as we pass the occasional settlement perched precariously on nearby cliffs.

We meet one of the ship’s custodians, Victor, who offers to take us on a tour of the vessel’s cockpit. They show us both the analog and modern navigational equipment, along with traditional maps and charts.

The Officer of the Watch tells us that we are about to entire the Grenville Channel, the narrow-ist section of the Passage and only 400 meters wide, with 1000 meter peaks overhead, and extending for 52 miles.

As we enter the channel the surrounding cliffs feel like walls and are dotted with waterfalls. Just outside the entrance a humpback whale breaches dramatically, and a group of dolphins are riding in the wake of the vessel.

The ship makes a brief stop at Bella Bella, also known as Waglisla, the home of the Heiltsuk on the east coast of Campbell Island.

That evening after dinner we go outside to watch the sunset, watching the clouds and water alternate between blues and pinks.

In the dim light to the south we can just make out the islands off the northern coast of Vancouver Island.
