Carried Out North

A road trip north across the Fraser Plateau to Northern British Columbia, Prince George, and the Burnie Glacier in the Howson Range - Chapter 1 of Roam British Columbia: The Fraser River to the Burnie Glacier Chalet

The Fraser River to the Burnie Glacier Chalet

Excitement builds as we leave behind the skyscrapers and sprawl of Vancouver, and set out east and north along the Fraser River and into the vast interior of British Columbia. The scenery turns into a blur of Lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir as our caravan of two trucks and a vanagon, the former newly-topped with rooftop tents, are packed full of gear for a month-long road trip.

As we push north onto the Cariboo Plateau the towns grow smaller, some no more than a simple crossroad, and their names mark the miles: 70, 100, and then 150 Mile House. 6.5 hours later as we pull into camp I am in a daze.

In the distance I can hear the sound of water, and our headlamps bounce off the rising fog. We make camp in the chilly autumn air. Viktoria sets out for a sunset paddle on the lake as we make a simple meal of meat, cheese, bread, fruit, and olives, and then go to bed early.

I wake up and unzip the tent door to look out over our campsite and the moss-like lake, and we make coffee and breakfast and set out north for El Shaddai Ranch, passing old mining towns from the Cariboo Gold Rush and the lands of Dakelh, its original inhabitants, who call themselves Yinka Dene, the people on the land.

When we arrive at El Shaddai we are met by Sean Roberts and his guide, Stacy, who introduce us to their horses, who seem more like family than working animals. After walking us through some of the basics of horseback riding, we set out to explore the 94 property which sits just east of the Fraser River.

As we wind along the ever-expanding trail network the tall grass has turned golden brown, and the first hints of yellow can be seen on the leaves of the aspen and ash, set against tall groves of lodgepole and sugar pines and scattered spruce. At some point I let my hands drop, and my horse proceeds without hesitation, clearly familiar with the trail, carrying me in a slow rhythm with the group.

Bidding farewell to Sean and Stacy, we drive into Prince George, the largest city in Northern British Columbia, which lies at a strategically important railroad crossroads that is also the regional economic and cultural epicenter.

The current town was originally a fur trading outpost established in 1807, and was itself built on a site that is home to the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. The name “Lheidli” means “The People from the Confluence of the River”, referring to the Nechako and Fraser River.

We have dinner at Trench Brewing, one of several breweries in Prince George, and then visit Birch and Bore, a charcuterie and market that sources the majority of its products from local farms where we buy sandwiches for the hike the following day.

Later that night at Salmon Valley Campground, Joseph orchestrates the complicated configuration of charging a half dozen devices as I begin the first of what will become a trip-long cribbage competition with Colton.

I wake to the sounds of the Salmon River and stumble over to the small coffee shop in the campground, where Bobbi the proprietor offers me the “Salmon Valley Campground Riverside Blend” from a local roaster. I walk along the river where the fall foliage continues its slow transition into bright orange and yellow, before returning to bring a half dozen cinnamon rolls back to the camp to go with our breakfast-skillet tacos.

Later that morning we pull into our designated meeting point to see Meghan, the lead guide of The Adventure Bus, standing next to the eponymously named bright-orange van. We pile into her bus and set out west into the Chilcotin plateau back-country and down forest roads to the Fraser Mountain trailhead.

As we hike up the trail the forest eventually gives way to expansive views, including Fraser Lake. I am grateful that it is late in the season and the bugs are non-existent, and soon we reach an abandoned fire lookout with sweeping views.

When we return to our vehicles Meghan produces celebratory beers (again, from Trench), which mixes well with the post-hike serotonin, endorphin, and music from our ‘Boks.

We take a short drive over to Beaumont Provincial Park, where a late-evening rain gives way to a foggy campfire and another round of cribbage.

The following morning we break camp and set out west towards mountains that appear low on the horizon but grow taller as we get closer. Evidence of water is everywhere: the clouds and dens(er) forests, and bridges over lakes and rivers that cut through steep canyons.

We take a right down a dirt road, and then another right before arriving on the shoreline of Telkwa Lake where a bright yellow seaplane is moored. There we meet Wendel, a pilot and the owner of Alpine Lakes Air, who is standing next to Sean, who introduces himself, tells us where to park, and helps us load our gear.

The plane, a De Havilland DHC-3T "Turbo Otter", slowly begins taxiing to the far end of the lake where Wendel increases the throttle and we race forward to lift up off the lake, banking slowly to the southwest over the town, roughly following the Telkwa River and into the Howson Range of the glacier-carved Kitimat Mountains.

We land on a small lake where we disembark. Bidding farewell to Wendell, Sean then leads us on a short hike up to the Burnie Chalet, which sits at an elevation of ~1100 meters and was conceived of by alpinist, IFMGA guide, and ski mountaineer Christoph Dietzfelbinger on the terminal moraine of the glacier.

The Chalet, famous with backcountry skiers, is only accessible by floatplane, and was built by volunteers with special permission of the Wet’suwet’en, who live on the surrounding land and who have worked with Christoph and the Chalet’s Austrian chef, Monika Loschberger, since its inception to encourage Yinta Waggu, which means respect and connectedness to the land in the Wet’suwet’en language.

That night Monika prepares for us a meal of pork schnitzel followed up with home-made huckleberry pie made with local berries. I pour a second glass of wine and walk outside to see a landscape lit by the bright light of the moon.

The next morning I wake and can hear the sounds of Monika cooking. I choose a seat in the main room and watch Monika prepare a breakfast of pancakes and eggs, as the rest of our group gathers.

Sean then helps us gather gear for the day’s hike, and soon we set out up and along the terminal moraine towards the Burnie Glacier looming large in varied blue hues.

As we approach the enormous glacier, Joseph laughs and says: “I feel small”.

At the edge of the ice we put on our crampons and venture out onto the ice, winding our way up past deep crevasses and spires many meters tall, pausing to drink water from the melting ice and laughing at how the ice glows a blue deep in the the many caves we pass.

As we continue to climb we see the feeder glaciers that cascade down from hanging valleys into the main valley. Between them the surface of the mountains have been scoured clean by ice and time to reveal a landscape of bright granite.

On either side of us and in the distance we can see the peaks of the Howson Range: Tom Thumb, Felber, Polemic, and Pyrite, all made of rock that has been slowly uplifted by tectonic forces for 650 million years.

Later that night, after a cleanse in the sauna, I step outside into the twilight and look around. Here, in the quiet, the landscape seems to whisper, “here is how it once was”.

The feeling of timeless immediacy.
