“Yeah, but it’s a dry heat” Felipe says with a laugh as we make our way east from California’s Central Valley up into El Dorado County and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

The elevation means cooler temperatures, particularly at night, and as the suburban sprawl of the flatlands give way to golden hills, mountains, and canyons, we pull into Milestone restaurant for an outdoor dinner and live music.

The Nisenan, the original indigenous people living in the western Sierra Nevada, would make knives and other cutting tools from the obsidian found in the volcanic soil.

Now that same soil has become fertile ground for orchards, like Apple Hill, the largest apple-growing area in California, and vineyards with names like Lava Cap and Wofford Acres.

The following day we make our way to Placerville, originally named “Hangtown” for being the site of the first public hanging in 1849.

On Main Street we visit a 150+ year old Victorian home, now home to the Sweetie Pies Bakery. Down the street the El Dorado County Farmers’ Market is in full swing, and the Placerville’s transition from gold mining town into a diverse and rich agricultural area is in full display.

We decide to head farther west into the mountains, climbing up Highway 50 to the brewery that bears its name, and which sits on the canyon edge overlooking China Creek and Weber Creek. The views (and beer) are incredible.

We head back “down the hill” in the late golden hour to the Smith Flat House for the first-half of our celebration of our last non-school night for the year and a return to teaching the following week.

Smith Flat House was originally the “Three Mile House”, being three-miles distant from Placerville to Carson City, and housed a general store, post office, dining room, and dance floor.

The following morning after breakfast at Love Birds Coffee & Tea we head west on Highway 50 we come around a hill to see the town of Placerville set against the vast Central Valley. We make a final stop for beer and tacos at the Main Street Tap House before pressing on.

The road widens into 4, 6, and 8 lanes of traffic, as golden hills give way to endless white and grey boxes.
