“Okay, we are leaving Alpine and about to lose service, we will see you when you get to camp!” I say to our friends who are a few hours behind us, and with that we enter into the cell service dead zone and make our way to camp near Terlingua, TX, a former mining camp with a population of 78 tucked in the hills between Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park.
"Está bien, nos vamos de Alpine y estamos a punto de perder el servicio, ¡nos vemos cuando llegues al campamento!" Les digo a nuestros amigos que están unas horas detrás de nosotros, y con eso entramos en la zona muerta del servicio celular y nos dirigimos al campamento cerca de Terlingua, TX, un antiguo campamento minero con una población de 78 personas escondido en las colinas entre Big Parque Estatal Bend Ranch y Parque Nacional Big Bend.
This is it, no distractions from social media or incoming calls and emails, just us and the great outdoors, a mere 9 hour drive from Austin into the West Texas vastness.
Esto es todo, sin distracciones de las redes sociales o llamadas y correos electrónicos entrantes, solo nosotros y el aire libre, a solo 9 horas en automóvil desde Austin a la inmensidad del oeste de Texas.
We arrive just in time to catch the sunset as we start unpacking and getting settled in. It’s quickly dark and the sky is speckled with light from the stars and planets, a hypnotic display.
Llegamos justo a tiempo para ver la puesta de sol cuando comenzamos a desempacar y acomodarnos. Rápidamente oscurece y el cielo está salpicado con la luz de las estrellas y los planetas, una exhibición hipnótica.
The chill of night sets in and we make our way to the tent for some warmth while we wait for the others to arrive. By 2:00 am the rest of our group has made it to camp and we briefly chat before turning the lantern off to get some sleep.
Llega el frío de la noche y nos dirigimos a la tienda para calentarnos un poco mientras esperamos a que lleguen los demás. A las 2:00 am, el resto de nuestro grupo llegó al campamento y conversamos brevemente antes de apagar la linterna para dormir un poco.
The next morning we make breakfast over the fire and head into Big Bend National Park (which takes its name for the enormous bend in the Rio Grande River) for a scenic drive and hike to The Window Trail. I’m reminded how out of shape I am as we hike uphill out of the canyon back to the trailhead, our next stop at the hot springs is exactly what I want after huffing and puffing my way back to the top.

We take in the sights on the scenic drive from Chisos Basin to Langford Hot Springs and are in awe of the mesas and mountains that are collectively considered sky islands. They range in elevation from ~1,800’ to over 7,800’, and contribute to the remarkable biodiversity of the region which is home to over 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals.
We relax our muscles in the crowded, but warm water and make small talk with the other visitors. We swim in the Rio Grande and excitedly straddled the US-Mexico border. After a good swim, we head back to camp for dinner and more stargazing.
Disfrutamos de las vistas en el recorrido panorámico desde Chisos Basin hasta Langford Hot Springs y nos asombramos de las mesas y montañas que se consideran colectivamente islas del cielo. Varían en elevación desde ~1800' hasta más de 7800' y contribuyen a la notable biodiversidad de la región que alberga más de 1200 especies de plantas, más de 450 especies de aves, 56 especies de reptiles y 75 especies de mamíferos. Relajamos nuestros músculos en el agua abarrotada, pero tibia, y conversamos un poco con los otros visitantes. Nadamos en el Río Grande y cruzamos con entusiasmo la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Después de un buen baño, regresamos al campamento para cenar y seguir observando las estrellas.
On our second and last full day at Big Bend we head to Santa Elena Canyon and swim the Rio Grande again, this time with towering walls nearly 1,500’ high on either side. We hear our voices echo against the cliffs as we wade through the cold water, taking in the beautiful scene.
En nuestro segundo y último día completo en Big Bend, nos dirigimos al Cañón de Santa Elena y nadamos en el Río Grande nuevamente, esta vez con paredes imponentes de casi 1,500 pies de altura a cada lado. Escuchamos el eco de nuestras voces contra los acantilados mientras caminamos por el agua fría, contemplando la hermosa escena.
That evening we make a campfire laughing, talking, and yet again staring up into the star-studded sky in awe.

It is weirdly unsettling yet refreshing to be without cell service for this long, but I’m enjoying getting to talk with everyone without distractions. I love that not only am I getting to see nature in its purest form, but my friends also. This is our first camping trip together as a group and I’m discovering new things about each person in a way I have not been able to before back in Austin. I learn what each person especially loves, what makes them happy and what makes them tick.
Es extrañamente inquietante pero refrescante estar sin servicio celular durante tanto tiempo, pero disfruto poder hablar con todos sin distracciones. Me encanta que no solo puedo ver la naturaleza en su forma más pura, sino también a mis amigos. Este es nuestro primer viaje de campamento juntos como grupo y estoy descubriendo cosas nuevas sobre cada persona de una manera que no había podido antes en Austin. Aprendo lo que cada persona ama especialmente, lo que las hace felices y las hace funcionar.
We are experiencing each other in our rawest form and there is such beauty to that, just as in nature.
Nos estamos experimentando el uno al otro en nuestra forma más cruda y hay tanta belleza en eso, como en la naturaleza.
The feeling of timeless immediacy.
