At the foothills of Shenandoah National Park lies the charming city of Staunton, Virginia, otherwise known as the Queen City of the Valley. With its historical attractions, spectacular mountain views, and a wide array of craft breweries, we decide a deep dive searching for the best trails and breweries is a great idea for a weekend getaway.

In the heart of the Staunton’s historic Wharf District, I find the city's producer-only Farmers Market. Lining the streets are local producers with their own organic produce and baked goods, and we purchase freshly baked sourdough bagels with a local blend of coffee before setting off for our first hike.

Just a 30-minute scenic drive away through the Shenandoah Valley is the Humpback Rock Trailhead. The hike begins with a strenuous 790-foot vertical scramble over a mile distance before reaching the summit.

We find a sign for the Appalachian Trail and head left to an opening in the treeline. I sit on a large boulder overlooking the rolling hills of Shenandoah Valley, taking in the remarkable view.

A solo 30 minutos en auto panorámico a través del valle de Shenandoah se encuentra el inicio del sendero Humpback Rock. La caminata comienza con una extenuante carrera vertical de 790 pies a lo largo de una milla de distancia antes de llegar a la cima.

Far below we can see cars, appearing tiny, passing by on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We descend and visit the 19th-century constructed Humpback Rock Visitor Center and Outdoor Farm Museum.

Famished, we make our way to Basic City Beer Company, which features one of the largest single-pour zinc bartops in the country, and is one of the fifteen breweries on the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail.

Once a former industrial complex, this beautiful reclaimed brewery has high ceilings, exposed reclaimed pipes protruding from the walls, and wooden taproom tables strewn around.

I order the classic “Don’t forget to take your Daily Pils” Pilsner, which I enjoy as I read about the brewery's history, learning that they pump millions of gallons of artesian spring water from the aquifer below and directly into their brewery.

Hambrientos, nos dirigimos a Basic City Beer Company, que cuenta con una de las barras de zinc de un solo vertido más grandes del país y es una de las quince cervecerías en Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail.

Looking for a place to cool off and relax, I head to Sherando Lake, choosing the 25-acre Lower Lake to park at one of the 65 campsites inside the park before grabbing my kayak and heading for the blessedly cool water. The soft sandy beach welcomes me as I launch my kayak. Leisurely paddling along, I shout greetings to fishermen; he proudly holds up a lake trout.

Buscando un lugar para refrescarme y relajarme, me dirijo al lago Sherando y elijo el Lower Lake de 25 acres para estacionar en uno de los 65 campamentos dentro del parque antes de tomar mi kayak y dirigirme hacia el agua benditamente fresca. Montgomery Hall Park, just a few miles from downtown Staunton, features 148 acres of rolling hills, perfect for a bike ride. There are three trails on the loop around the park: Scout, Yulee’s, and MHP Expressway. I take a singletrack 4.1-mile loop, and halfway through it opens to a beautiful meadow with a series of exhilarating switchbacks, keeping me on edge and making my heart pitter-patter as I push faster and race downhill.

Montgomery Hall Park, a solo unas pocas millas del centro de Staunton, cuenta con 148 acres de colinas, perfectas para un paseo en bicicleta. Hay tres senderos que rodean el parque: Scout, Yulee's y MHP Expressway. Tomo un circuito de 4,1 millas de una sola pista y, a la mitad, se abre a una hermosa pradera con una serie de emocionantes curvas, que me mantienen nervioso y hacen que mi corazón palpite mientras acelero y corro cuesta abajo.

Adding another stamp to my Beerwerks Passport, I head to another brewery on the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, Skipping Rock Beer Company, ordering the refreshing, fruity blonde Summer Ale. Creating an atmosphere that is true to their slogan, “Worry less. Live More.” Skipping Rock features a 1.9-acre outdoor space with a concert stage, cornhole, and picnic tables.

Al agregar otro sello a mi pasaporte Beerwerks, me dirijo a otra cervecería en Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, Skipping Rock Beer Company, y pido la refrescante y afrutada rubia Summer Ale. Creando una atmósfera fiel a su lema: “Preocúpate menos. Vive mas." Skipping Rock cuenta con un espacio al aire libre de 1,9 acres con un escenario para conciertos, un cornhole y mesas de picnic.

I decide to wrap up my weekend adventure with a climb along the bluffs of Raven’s Roost Overlook. As I reach the summit some 1,800 feet above the valley below, there are incredible views to the west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I turn left to find a single, heroic tree jetting out from the cliff edge.

I turns out the bluffs along this ridge feature more than 14 established toprope routes, with grades averaging from 5.4 to 5.8. We make friends with a group of climbers, and we climb the single-pitch route 100 feet from the ground and turn to take in the view just before the sun goes down.

Resulta que los acantilados a lo largo de esta cresta cuentan con más de 14 rutas toprope establecidas, con pendientes que promedian entre 5,4 y 5,8. The sky opens wide before me, yellows turn to vivid orange, and blue turns to indigo before the sun fades away behind the rolling hills in the distance. As the sun takes its reprieve from the sky, I bid farewell to Stauton.
