I look in my mirrors to see a long cloud of dust trailing off behind our caravan as we barrel down a light sandy dirt road 30 miles from pavement, the sun slowly setting behind the mountains as winter storms try to make their way east. The radio chirps, it’s Ben, and he says “We must stop for photos.”

To the east the vast Laguna Salada dry lake bed stretches over the southern terminus of the San Andreas fault and stretches to the Sierra de Los Cucapah mountains turning pink in the evening sun.

To the west the sun drops behind the Sierra de Juárez mountains, and at mile 60 from pavement we turn right up a broad wash and wind high into Guadalupe Canyon, past towering rocks and cacti to where the presence of moisture turns the Sonoran Desert green.

There are springs, creeks that we must cross, and hot and warm pools at a placed called Guadalupe Canyon Hot Springs or Guadalupe Canyon Oasis, or to many: “those awesome hot springs just south of the border.”
We are not the first to visit - the thousand-year old petroglyphs are testament to that fact - nor will we be the last.

That night we hang lights in the trees and soak in a clear, hot pool that overlooks the valley below. We laugh and are thankful for our first night in Baja. The silence in-between our conversations is deafening.

I bring out the maps and we discuss our journey south and intended stops along the way. The first of many breakfast 10 Barrel margaritas are passed around before we top off our batteries and pack up.

Soon we set out east out of the canyon winding slowly over rock and through shallow sand, grateful for clearance, grateful we knew to air down to help soften the blow of 30 miles of washboarded roads, and grateful for the adventure ahead.
