As we head south out of Loreto in our van caravan, the dark red eastern face of the Sierra de la Gigantic towers some 3,000+ feet overhead like a castle wall guarding Baja’s interior from the deep blue of the Gulf of California and its jagged islands with names like Isla Dazante and Isla Carmen.
A medida que nos dirigimos al sur de Loreto en nuestra camioneta caravana, la cara oriental de color rojo oscuro de la Sierra de la Gigantic se eleva a más de 3,000 pies de altura como un muro de castillo que protege el interior de Baja del azul profundo del Golfo de California y sus islas irregulares con nombres como Isla Dazante e Isla Carmen.
We begin a circuitous climb up and east, and at the summit a few clouds remain. We turn left (south) off Highway 1 and soon the road turns to dirt. We pass a small spring, dammed to store the water for the rancheros and their small herd, before turning to face a series of red mesas wrapped in green.
Comenzamos un ascenso tortuoso hacia arriba y hacia el este, y en la cima quedan algunas nubes. Giramos a la izquierda (sur) en la autopista 1 y pronto el camino se convierte en tierra. Pasamos por un pequeño manantial, represado para almacenar agua para los rancheros y su pequeño rebaño, antes de girar para enfrentar una serie de mesas rojas envueltas en verde.
The late-season rains have turned the landscape bright green in a verdant explosion of color as all living things engage in a mad race to grow and reproduce in a brief window of plenty.

We arrive at an overlook some 1200’ above the ocean below that looks down the coastline. Far below the road the road continues south, and in the distance we can see the small village, Puerto Ague Verde, from which the area derives its commonly used name, “Agua Verde”.

We pause to take in the view. Ben produces a guitar. Time slows.

We wind down the narrow, oft-single-lane dirt road before arrive at San Cosme, a small fishing and ranching village.

Just north of town, at low tide, are hot springs; a mile south, a striking home with a man made harbor, rumored to be owned by an American motocross champion.

We continue on before taking an unmarked road out to a rocky beach wrapped in mangroves. The sun sets and the moonrises as we watch pelicans fish the schools of sardines that race into the shallows at dusk.

The following morning we break camp and head towards Puerto Agua Verde, passing a goat herds and several other unmarked turn offs that lead, we hope, to other beaches.
A la mañana siguiente levantamos el campamento y nos dirigimos hacia Puerto Agua Verde, pasando un rebaño de cabras y varios otros desvíos sin marcar que conducen, esperamos, a otras playas.
The town of Puerto Agua Verde has a market, a church, and two small restaurants (Brisa del Mar & Faro San Marcial) on the main beach which look out over the bay and Punta Agua Verde. There are several sailboats at anchor in the bay, buffeted by the strong Del Norte winds.
El pueblo de Puerto Agua Verde tiene un mercado, una iglesia y dos pequeños restaurantes (Brisa del Mar y Faro San Marcial) en la playa principal que miran hacia la bahía y Punta Agua Verde. Hay varios veleros anclados en la bahía, azotados por los fuertes vientos del Norte.
The peninsula, Punta Agua Verde or “El Puerto”, has a “tombolo” (sand bridge) between the mainland and tied island. On it are the ruins of a restaurant long gone, and several campers in 4WD vehicles. We consider trying to join them, but decide it was best not to risk it in our 2WD vans.
La península, Punta Agua Verde o "El Puerto", tiene un "tombolo" (puente de arena) entre el continente y la isla amarrada. En él se encuentran las ruinas de un restaurante desaparecido hace mucho tiempo y varios campistas en vehículos 4x4. Consideramos tratar de unirnos a ellos, pero decidimos que era mejor no arriesgarnos en nuestras camionetas 2WD.
We set out north and take another un-named turn off through some trees and out a wash that cuts between two hills. To the south we find a group of expats camping, utterly off grid, sharing dinner with one another.
Partimos hacia el norte y tomamos otro desvío sin nombre a través de algunos árboles y salimos de un arroyo que corta entre dos colinas. Hacia el sur encontramos un grupo de expatriados acampando, completamente desconectados, compartiendo la cena entre ellos.
We make camp on the south end of the beach and watch the moon rise before making a fire out of driftwood.

Our alarms go off before sunrise and caravan begins the slow journey back up the main road, stopping to view and photograph the sunrise.

Soon the sky erupts in a caucophony of color, and we are overwhelmed with the smells of the Creosote, Cardon, and Ocitillo and a hundred other unknown desert plants in full bloom. The cacti and stones stretch and reach towards a canopy on fire that stretches from ocean to mountains.
Pronto el cielo estalla en una caucofonía de color, y nos abruman los olores de la creosota, el cardón y el ocitillo y otras cien desconocidas plantas del desierto en plena floración. The grand show eventually passes on to the west, and we set out in the wake of a dream impossible to re-create, and into the heart of the Baja Peninsula.
El gran espectáculo finalmente pasa al oeste, y partimos a raíz de un sueño imposible de recrear, y hacia el corazón de la península de Baja California.
