After winding our way up into the mountains into the interior of the peninsula, we turn off the dirt road and pull up to a ramshackle collection of buildings surrounded by a quasi-intentional garden of cacti and boojum. This is the iconic Coco’s Corner.

Prior to the completion of Highway 5, travelers along the east side of Baja, including those running the Baja 1000, would almost certainly stop Coco’s Corner. Now it requires a small detour.

To the side of the largest building a collection of porcelain toilets and hollow televisions are covered in stickers and branded with a hand-painted "Coco's Corner”.

Inside in a wheelchair sits Jorge Enrique Corral Sandez, or just "Coco". Time and diabetes have taken his legs but not his irreverent humor, and he offers us cold cans of beer while chaotically switching between English and Spanish to requisition a bra for his collection stapled to the roof.
Dentro, en silla de ruedas, se sienta Jorge Enrique Corral Sandez, o simplemente "Coco". We share gossip and news and inquire about his time here in relative isolation. Coco, now 80, says that he left Ensenada 50 or 60 years prior for the solitude of the desert:

We laugh and share gossip about the new highway and stories about this year’s Baja 1000. He gesture to us to sign the guestbook, the most recent of dozens, and then asks us to like his Facebook Page before asking to go outside in the warm afternoon sun.
We laugh and then continue our way north.
