Taking one of the dozens of unmarked dirt roads a couple miles to the north of camp of Cataviña, we venture out into the alien landscape and pick one of a thousand campsites in a thousand small clearings surrounded by ten thousand strange, otherworldly plants and towering granite boulders.
Tomando una de las docenas de caminos de tierra sin marcar a un par de millas al norte del campamento de Cataviña, nos aventuramos al paisaje alienígena y escogemos uno de los mil campings en mil pequeños aclaramientos rodeados por diez mil plantas extrañas, otras plantas de otro mundo y granito.
We form our caravan into a circle and make camp as the setting sun casts long shadows over the boojum, or “cirio”. We scramble to the top of a nearby rock formation, sharing libations and loving the quietude.

In every direction granite boulders the size of cars and houses appear strewn about, interspersed with towering cacti and the alien, Dr. Seuss-like boojum that twist tentacle-like towards the sky.
Here the ancient, geologic core of Baja is exposed by a hundred million years of erosion and uplift, as tectonic forces slowly pull the Baja Peninsula to the northwest and away from the mainland of Mexico and the North American Plate.
The boulders themselves were created in the Cretaceous period, and are geological cousins to the rocks in the Transverse and Sierra Nevada ranges a thousand miles to the north.

That night we reunite with friends who are on a long-distance 4WD tour across Baja, and we gather for dinner around a campfire, and under a massive, 250+ year old Cardon cacti, the largest cactus species in the world.

We get up early for a quick meal of Breakfast Skillet and Fusili pasta, and set out to explore the nearby abandoned “duomon”, and the cave paintings, or "pinturas rupestres", of which some 400 can be found in Baja and are thought to be over 7,000 years old.

Afterwards we head south and through the small town and past its one market, abandoned gas station, and the recently-built Hotel Misíon Santa Maria. We turn left down a long dirt road towards Rancho Santa Ynez.

We pass a large lot catering to RVs and overlanders needing a plumbed bathroom, and an airstrip. We park and walk up to a building covered in stickers that appears closed. We hear a generator start, and soon Mayra appears and swings open the windows, exposing a humble kitchen with a refrigerator full of cold beer.
Pasamos por un lote grande que atiende a vehículos recreativos y extranjeros que necesitan un baño con fontanería y una pista de aterrizaje. Aparcamos y caminamos hasta un edificio cubierto de pegatinas que parece cerrado. Oímos que un generador arranca, y pronto aparece Mayra y abre las ventanas, dejando al descubierto una cocina humilde con un refrigerador lleno de cerveza fría.
Heaping plates of chilaquiles, enchiladas, and hot tortillas are served, and she offers us the wifi password, something of a surprise.

Bellies and hearts full, we pull out slowly onto Highway 1 and turn south and towards the wild-lands of Baja California Sur.
