I wake to the sound of barking dog, and I climb out of bed and throw on additional layers before donning my snowpants and boots in preparation for the ice world outside my cabin at Winterlake Lodge, located just west of Skwentna, Alaska and the second checkpoint of the 2021 Iditarod Trail. The average temperature in Alaska in March is 25°F. Today the daytime high is 5 degrees and is forecasted to average 5°F for the rest of the week.

Stepping outside I see the bouncing and jerky movements of headlamps down on the lake, and I make my way across a thick layer of ice formed by frigid wind that now covers the nearly five feet of snow that fell yesterday.

Due to COVID the route of the Iditarod was altered to prevent teams from going through vulnerable remote and/or indigenous communities. Instead the teams travel halfway to Nome before doubling back.
