From his office on Santa Clara Street, it takes six minutes for wind-rider Derek Turner to reach the ocean and Surfer’s Point.

The window into his office faces west, and in the summer the hot inland valleys pull the air inland, creating a local thermal that creates fantastic wind surfing conditions beloved by a growing community of wind enthusiasts.

Above the mountains hangs a thermal cloud. Above the bay: dozens of kites, darting and dipping in flashes of red, green and yellow.
