We wake early, pack our dry bags with food, sunscreen, and dry clothes before strapping them tightly to our Gili Sports SUP. Above us the dark blue sky is changing, now streaked with bright oranges and yellows as the sun rises above the vibrant red rock of Navajo Sandstone.
Nos levantamos temprano, empacamos nuestras bolsas secas con comida, protector solar y ropa seca antes de atarlos firmemente a nuestro Gili Sports SUP. We lower our boards down into the reflective waters of Lake Powell, a man-made reservoir created by the damming of the Colorado River. Although this damming tragically filled much of Glen Canyon, there are now more than 2,000 miles of shoreline to explore, carved by hundreds of years of erosion.

With over 94 major canyon sections and 150 miles of water to explore, there are any number of places to choose to drop in our paddle boards. We decide the best place to enter is at Antelope Point Public Launch Ramp.

The reservoir is adjacent to Antelope Canyon, famous for its red rock curvatures and twisted facades that allow sunlight to beam down through the canyon cracks. We paddle west along the main channel for about a mile before entering the towering walls of Lower Antelope Canyon.

The Navajo Nation call Upper Antelope Canyon Tse’ bighanilini, meaning “The Place Where Water Runs Through Rocks”. As we enter the first sections of Lower Antelope Canyon, or Hasdestwazi, meaning “spiral rock arches”, with its towering canyon walls rising 120 feet above me, I am in awe and grateful for the clear skies. Rainfall can make these canyons deadly with a high risk of flash flooding.
La Nación Navajo llama al Alto Cañón del Antílope Tse' bighanilini, que significa "El Lugar Donde el Agua Corre a Través de las Rocas". We continue paddling through the canyon, gliding through the calm waters for another mile before the water gives way at last to the soft sand.

From here, we park our paddle boards on the sand next to the others propped along the shoreline and prepare for the next half of our journey, hiking the slots of Lower Antelope Canyon.

Closed now to tours from the traditional entrance and protected by the Navajo Parks and Recreation, from here you are able to hike as much of the canyon as you want. This is the only way to experience Antelope Canyon without a guide and to experience the otherworldly rock formations carved by wind, water, and ice across the millennia.
