Silences in Torres del Paine
The overwhelming quietude of Torres del Paine in Chilean Patagonia.
I have been inhabiting one of the most spectacular and wild places on Earth for the past 6 years. My job? Creating content with a camera in my hand, and a tripod and lenses in my backpack.

When I got the job 6 years ago with EcoCamp Patagonia – the world’s first geodesic hotel – I had no idea this would be the best photography school ever. I never actually studied photography, however, hiking every day into Patagonia’s wilderness looking for the best light is a great way to learn.
Cuando conseguí el trabajo soñado hace 6 años con EcoCamp Patagonia – el primer hotel geodésico del mundo – no tenía idea que se iba a convertir en el mejor curso de fotografía que podía imaginar. En realidad, nunca estudie fotografía. Sin embargo, caminar todos los días en los senderos remotos de la Patagonia buscando la mejor luz es una excelente forma de aprender.
Torres del Paine National Park is vast, some 227,298 hectares of wilderness in southern Chile that offers an astonishing variety of landscapes. Here you will find piercing blue walls of vast glaciers, turquoise waters of some great lakes, lush green forests and dramatic plains with giant, granite mountains as a backdrop.
And quiet. Often no sound other than the wind.
El Parque Nacional Torres del Paine es una gran área de 227,228 hectáreas de naturaleza pristina en el sur de Chile que ofrece una asombrosa variedad de paisajes. Aquí verás enormes paredes de hielo de un azul profundo, aguas turquesas de grandes lagos, bosques impenetrables y amplias llanuras con cerros gigantes y granito como telón de fondo.
Y mucha calma. Muchas veces no hay otro sonido que el canto del viento
Inside these landscapes you will find some surprising inhabitants. Amongst these animals, it is impossible not to mention the elusive puma – the highest density populations of mountain lions on the planet is right here. You will see plenty of other amazing species such as the great Andean Condor, the endangered South Andean Deer (also called “Huemul”), the funny Guanaco and the cute Armadillo.
Y en estos paisajes viven sus sorprendentes animales. Aquí es imposible no mencionar al escurridizo puma – la mayor densidad del mundo de estos felinos está aquí. Pero también verás muchas otras especias fascinantes como el gran cóndor andino, el huemul en peligro de extinción, el gracioso guanaco y el elegante armadillo.
My favorite off-the-beaten-path spot is a steep hike on a mountain. It is a full day hike that is exposed to the elements – it becomes impossible on a windy day. It is called Cerro Paine and it culminates to 1600 meters.
The first portion is a gentle slope through a silent forest. From time to time the roar of the retreating nearby glaciers breaks the silence. In Autumn (April), the contrast of the red, orange and green leaves and the mountains – especially at sunrise – allows some spectacular shots. The second half of the hike is a steep uphill through boulders and loose stones. There the cold wind never stops blowing.
It is magic.
Mi sector favorito es una caminata empinada en un cerro. Es un día completo de trekking expuesto a los elementos – se hace imposible en un día ventoso. Se llama Cerro Paine y culmina a 1600 metros.
La primera parte es una pendiente leve en un bosque silencioso. De vez en cuando, el rugido de los glaciares en retroceso rompe este silencio. En otoño (abril), los tonos rojos, naranja, amarillo y verdes de las hojas se mezclan con el color de la montaña – especialmente al amanecer – permitiendo algunas tomas espectaculares. La segunda mitad de la caminata es una empinada cuesta con piedras sueltas y rocas gigantes. Aquí el viento nunca deja de soplar.
Es mágico.
When I see wild animals I usually sit down and wait until magic happens. That is when I could photograph this hungry puma going after a herd of guanaco, this mother Culpeo fox protecting her baby, this endangered South Andean Deer having lunch at the shore of Pehoe Lake or this mother puma playing with her 10-month cub.
Cuando veo animales salvajes me gusta sentarme y esperar hasta que suceda la magia. Fue entonces cuando pude fotografiar este puma hambriento persiguiendo una manda de guanacos, esta madre zorro Culpeo protegiendo a su cachorro, este huemul almorzando a orillas del lago Pehoe y esta madre puma jugando con su cachorrito de 10 meses.
Through photography, I want to spread respect towards nature. Because with more humility humans would behave a more responsible way towards nature. And I am deeply convinced photography is a noble art to convert humans into humbler beings.
A través de la fotografía, quiero difundir el respeto por la naturaleza. Porque con más humildad los humanos se comportarían de manera más responsable hacia la naturaleza. Y estoy profundamente convencido que la fotografía es un arte noble para convertir los humanos en seres más humildes.
