The first descent of the “El Jinete” waterfall in Chilean Patagonia, Futaleufú

Durante cinco generaciones, la familia Toro ha llamado hogar al Valle del Río Azul, y ahora el kayakista local David Toro y sus amigos Jaime Sandoval y Carlos Castillo intentan un primer descenso de "El Jinete", una cascada alimentada por glaciares en el corazón de la Patagonia Verde.
For five generations the Toro Family have called The Rio Azul Valley home, and now local “kayakista” David Toro and friends Jamie Sandoval and Carlos Castillo attempt a first descent of “El Jinete”, a glacier-fed waterfall in the heart of Patagonia Verde.
A pesar de la época del año y las fuertes lluvias de los días anteriores, esa mañana el sol estaba presente en el valle de Futaleufú, se podía respirar el aire frío de invierno y las montañas nevadas destacaban su azul típico de esta época del año.
Despite the winter snows and rains of the previous week, the morning sun shone bright over the Futaleufú valley. We breathed deep the cold winter air as snow mountains shined bright and blue.
Todo iba de acuerdo al plan, equipo listo, kayaks asegurados y cámara cargada.
Everything was going according to plan: equipment, kayaks, and camera gear were loaded.
Hora de partir hacia el Valle del Río Azul: hogar de mi familia y la de mi hermano de kayak durante cinco generaciones, y lo que creemos es una cascada perfecta ... si las condiciones son las correctas.
Time to depart for the Rio Azul Valley: home to my and my kayaking brother's family for five generations, and what we believe is a perfect waterfall... if conditions are right.

Mientras viajábamos hacia el Valle Azul, sentía tan bien estar ahí: lugar que había sido el hogar de nuestra familia, Las Zapatas, hace años y pesar de que ya no es así, no nos sentíamos como extraños: seguía siendo nuestro hogar, parte de nosotros, de nuestra sangre.
As we ventured into the Azul Valley, it felt good to be there: a place that had been home to our family, The Zapatas, for years. And although the land has since changed hands we did not feel like strangers: it was still our home, part of us, of our blood.
Mientras caminábamos por Arroyo Zapata hasta el cañón, las hojas dejaban caer pequeñas gotas cuando las sacudíamos por accidente.
While we walked through Arroyo Zapata to the canyon, the leaves dropped small drops when we shook them by accident.
Se habían formado pequeñas lagunas y algunos arroyos corrían libres por el suelo buscando su camino, el agua fue traspasando nuestra ropa a mediada que avanzábamos por el sendero, esa sensación, nos conectaba aún más con la tierra, el bosque y nuestras raíces.
Small lagoons had formed and some streams ran free on the ground looking for their way along the path as we walked, water soaking our clothes and us the same as the forest and the land.

Our hearts anxious with excitement and our minds focused on our purpose: the first kayak descent of the waterfall “El Jinete” or “The Rider” in English.

We explore, discuss and plan. Our lines were chosen.
La caída no dura más que un par de segundos, allí la fuerza no es importante, si no, la precisión con que se controla la caída, estando en flujo estás con el agua y su energía.
The fall does not last more than a couple of seconds: the force is not important but precision is, being in flow with the water and its energy.
El viento aúlla, la lluvia cae y los gritos de celebración resuenan entre las paredes del cañón.
The wind howls, rain falls, and screams of celebration echo among the canyon walls.
El agua alta nos permite flotar hasta la próxima cascada: "Cascada Toro". Sonreímos.
The high water allows us to float to the next waterfall: "Cascada Toro". We smile.
