We are in the heart of Big Sky Country, and we’re tucked into a cozy cabin in the mountains after a day of acquainting ourselves with the town. I slip into bed and will myself to sleep.

The hours before dawn are always the most peaceful, but not exactly silent. Every individual sound is isolated and amplified. A bird calls in the distance, a twig snaps underfoot.

My headlamp illuminates the path ahead of us: what lies beyond the reach of the light is a mystery slowly unfolding. We climb steadily as the sky begins to reveal itself and our surroundings: tranquil lakes, giant evergreens, a dusting of snow, and the Beehive Basin of the Rocky Mountains.

We bask in the morning light before descending down the trail.

By the time we make it to the river, the sun is high in the sky. In my waders, I step carefully into its flow. The pressure of the water hugs my legs as the current rushes by. With a few flicks of the wrist, I cast my line.

The fish aren’t biting, but simply being in the water on this beautiful day is worth the effort.

We head back to the cabin to get cleaned up and then set off to the Town Center for dinner and Big Sky’s weekly Music in the Mountains gathering.

As the evening progresses, the crowd grows thicker. I imagine the entire community is out here tonight. The music and energy wash over us as we dance and watch the sun dip behind the mountains.

Another morning, another adventure. Today it’s a steep, downhill single track calling our names.

I let gravity do its work and glide down the trail, my weight balanced on the pedals and my body hovering over the seat of the bike. Each of us focuses silently on manipulating our body weight to work with the trail, rather than against it.

The mountainous views and twists and turns are exhilarating. We reach the bottom with smiles plastered across our faces. Over coffee and breakfast burritos at Caliber Coffee, we rehash the excitement from the morning.

Later in the day, we set out to explore more of this quaint mountain town. We visit the Beehive Basin Brewery, and later, enjoy deliciously cheesy pizza at Pinky G’s.

Our time here is quickly drawing to a close, but we insist on making the most of every hour that remains. We drive to the Montana and Wyoming border and enter Yellowstone National Park.

Immediately I regret not having more time to spend here; given the chance I would lose myself in this otherworldly landscape.

A herd of bison dots the plains stretching out toward the mountains. We watch as they graze and move their massive bodies with great patience and ease.

We bid these giants farewell and make our way deeper into the park. Peeling away from the crowd, we walk to a quieter viewpoint to admire this geological wonder.
Nos despedimos de estos gigantes y nos dirigimos al monumento más emblemático de Yellowstone, Old Faithful. Alejándonos de la multitud, caminamos hacia un mirador más tranquilo para admirar esta maravilla geológica.
The land here is scarred by hundreds of geysers–but not in an ugly way. They’re the kinds of scars that tell stories and invite curiosity. We leave the park in awe with many unanswered questions. I hope to return someday to search for the answers.
La tierra aquí está marcada por cientos de géiseres, pero no de una manera fea. Son el tipo de cicatrices que cuentan historias e invitan a la curiosidad. Dejamos el parque asombrados con muchas preguntas sin respuesta. Espero volver algún día para buscar las respuestas.
After dinner at Riverhouse BBQ, the sky leads us back to our cabin in the mountains. I take a few moments to myself outside on the deck and try to memorize the contours of the land around me.
I won’t soon forget this place where the sky hugs the earth in an all-encompassing embrace.
Después de cenar en Riverhouse BBQ, el cielo nos lleva de regreso a nuestra cabaña en las montañas. Tomo unos momentos para mí afuera en la cubierta y trato de memorizar los contornos de la tierra que me rodea.
No olvidaré pronto este lugar donde el cielo abraza la tierra en un abrazo que lo abarca todo.
The feeling of timeless immediacy.
