Nobody drinks mate because they are thirsty.

Mate is not a drink. Okay, maybe it is technically. It is liquid that enters through the mouth. But it is not a drink. In this country (Argentina) nobody drinks mate because he is thirsty. It is rather like a habit, much like scratching.
El mate no es una bebida. De acuerdo, tal vez lo sea técnicamente. Es un líquido que entra por la boca. Pero no es una bebida. En este país (Argentina) nadie toma mate porque tiene sed. Es más bien como un hábito, muy parecido a rascarse.
Mate is exactly the opposite of television: it makes you talk if you are with someone, and makes you think when you are alone.
El mate es exactamente lo contrario de la televisión: te hace hablar si estás con alguien y te hace pensar cuando estás solo.
When someone comes to your house the first sentence is ‘hello’ and the second is ‘some mates?’.
Cuando alguien viene a tu casa la primera frase es 'hola' y la segunda es '¿unos mates?'.
This happens in every house. Rich and poor alike. It happens between chatty women and gossip girls, happens between serious or childish men.

The keyboards of Argentina all have spilled tea leaves of the yerba. The yerba is the only thing here that is always in every home. Always. Even with inflation, with hunger, with military goverments, with democracy, with any of our eternal plagues and curses. And if one day there is no yerba, a neighbor will have it, and will give it to you. The yerba is not denied to anyone.
Los teclados de Argentina todos han derramado hojas de té de la yerba. La yerba es lo único aquí que siempre está en todos los hogares. Siempre. Incluso con inflación, con hambre, con gobiernos militares, con democracia, con cualquiera de nuestras eternas plagas y maldiciones. Y si un día no hay yerba, algún vecino la tendrá, y te la dará. This is the only country in the world where the decision to stop being a boy and becoming a man happens on a particular day. No long pants, circumcision, college or moving out of their parents home.

In Argentina we start to become a grown up the day we need to have a mate, for the first time, alone. It is not by chance. It is not so.
