The Will of Ruth

Persistence and payoff in the Skagit Range of the North Cascades

By/por Sonja Saxe

I round a bend of overgrown foliage and a familiar outline comes into view: Ruth Mountain. I have become acquainted with her these past couple months: her jagged contours, inviting snowy slopes, and a propensity to bend the weather to her will.

This is the third time I have hiked this stretch of trail in seven weeks, and while the forecast for the weekend seems promising, the unexpected inclement weather on my previous trips to this area leave me only cautiously optimistic, but determined.

In May, my husband Alex and I attempted to camp on the summit and then ski off, however, difficult trail conditions slowed us down and we were forced to camp just below the summit due to dwindling daylight and energy levels. No big deal, I thought at the time, we’ll just summit in the morning.

While the next morning dawned bright and clear, 200’ shy of the summit we were engulfed in a stubborn cloud. We made it to the summit, but could not see any of the views I knew were hiding just beyond the fog.

A few weeks later I attempted to summit again, but was thwarted by an incoming storm that the forecast had failed to detect.

Not ones to be easily deterred, Alex and I decided to return in the height of summer when the weather would be more stable. The second weekend in July felt perfect and so we set off, once again, for Ruth Mountain.

Back on the trail, I am happy to find that the lower sections are mostly clear of any snow. We cruise through portions of trail that two months prior required painstaking navigation.

After just over two hours of hiking we reach Hannegan Pass, a point that took us nearly five hours to reach on our past trip. Feeling good, we continue up the infamous muddy gully—an unmaintained portion of trail that requires holding onto roots for guidance and balance.

At the top of the gully we get our first great view of Mount Shuksan. This mountain is most often seen from the west, so seeing it from this angle felt like seeing an entirely new mountain.

We traverse around a knoll and as we do, an unobstructed, panoramic view of Ruth Mountain begins to dominate the landscape. We make our way along the trail, carefully picking our way through a few snowy sections before finally reaching the glacial moraine. We drop our packs and I reach into mine and pull out a bag of Sour Patch Watermelons. As Alex and I enjoy the sweet and sour snack I look up at the summit and see a few groups coming down looking very much like ants on a snow cone from our vantage point.

We finish our snack and put on our harnesses, helmets, and rope, gearing up for the final push over the glacier. This section is quite steep, but the snow is soft and conducive to kicking in solid steps. Above me, Alex is setting the path for us in a rhythmic thwack thwack crunch as he stomps his crampons into the snowy slope to gain purchase.

We continue like this for a few hundred vertical feet when, after just over five hours of hiking/climbing, we run out of slope. There is only a short rocky section for us to scramble up and we’ll be at the summit.

“Welcome!” greets a friendly climber with a smile as I reach the summit and begin to unclip from the rope. “Have you seen this view of Shuksan before?”

“No, and I am so excited!”

I can barely believe my eyes as the view unfolds before me. Mount Shuksan and its Nooksack and Price glaciers, Icy Peak, Seahpo, the Pickets, and even the vague outlines of Glacier Peak and Mount Rainier are visible from the top. Every direction I look is postcard-worthy. In the midst of this bluebird day, I am having a difficult time imagining that exactly seven weeks ago we were standing in the same spot, surrounded by a wall of clouds instead of a sea of peaks.

The friendly climber and his partner are also staying the night. We set set up near their tent and chatted with them all afternoon, exchanging tales from previous trips, recommending hikes and summits, and sharing in the awe of our surroundings.

By sunset, there is another group on the summit with us, exclaiming their admiration of the scene. The whole world glows golden. Icy Peak’s glaciated northwest aspect has turned a faint pink while in the distance alpenglow drips down the faces of Mount Challenger and Whatcom Peak.

After the last light is swallowed by shadows, I crawl into my sleeping bag. I look out the door and can still see Mount Shuksan’s glaciers glowing in the twilight. What a place!, I think as I drift off.

¡Qué lugar !, pienso mientras me quedo dormido.

I wake for sunrise the next morning. It is only 4:30 but the summer dawn starts especially early in northern Washington. The sunrise show isn’t quite as colorful as the previous evening, but its soft palette is beautiful.

I head back into the tent for a quick nap I tell myself, but I quickly fall into a deep sleep. When I awake two hours later I look at my phone, it’s 7:30am already, far past the time we planned to leave. I shake Alex awake, “We should get going!”

Outside our tent door the bright light of day shines into my eyes. I shield them and look around, all our neighbors have left. It is now just us, alone on the summit. I take a few minutes to appreciate the scene. The mountains. The glaciers. The silence.

Half an hour later we are making our way down Ruth’s snowy slopes. I feel overwhelmed by gratitude and appreciation. It took three attempts, and quite a lot of frustration and energy, but finally I got to experience a magical 17 hours on the summit of Ruth Mountain.

As we descend from Hannegan Pass, I look back at the summit. I know this won’t be my last visit, not by a long shot. Until next time, Ruth Mountain, I think as we head into the forest and the summit disappears. Out of sight but not out of mind.
