THE LOST PLACES RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PROCESS

we go further together

The Journal of Lost Time believes in restorative justice and providing violators of our Code of Conduct with an opportunity to learn, grow and demonstrate improvement to rejoin the community safely. We offer this only if the offender acknowledges and takes accountability for their actions. The Journal of Lost Time will only be providing restorative justice opportunities for offenses that occur during a Lost Places event or an affiliated event.

If an attendee has an issue or an incident occurred with another attendee outside of a Lost Places event, they can request a review from the The Lost Places team by emailing safetyandsecurity@thejournaloflosttime.com, however that will not fall under the Restorative Justice Process.

Eligibility for restorative justice opportunities is determined at the sole discretion of the The Lost Places team, and we reserve the right to decide on a case-by-case basis whether an individual qualifies for this process.

The Process

When an incident occurs that violates our Code of Conduct, severe incidents will be reported to the Authorities with permission of the victim, and the violator will be immediately asked to leave the premises and escorted out by our security team.

For both severe and lesser violations, The Lost Places senior team will create an Incident Report for the violator that documents the incident, and in lesser cases outlines the Restorative Justice steps necessary to be allowed to return to our Events. This Report will be given to the violator.

The reports will be shared with the independent Safety and Security Committee for review. This will be decided on a case by case basis.

In some cases the Security & Safety Committee will make a collective decision on the restorative justice steps.

Restorative Justice STEPS

These are the steps expected of violators to be allowed to return to The Lost Places events. In some cases there will be additional items include in the Incident and Restorative Justice Report.

  • Acknowledgement and Accountability: Offender vocally states that they are aware that their behavior, specific to the incident, was inappropriate and that they are motivated to learn and improve.

  • Action: Offender takes measurable steps to demonstrate learning and growth as specified in their Incident Report and/or as outlined below.

  • Time: The Senior Staff, often in consultation with the independent Safety & Security Committee will make a decision on an amount of time that the violator is banned from The Lost Places events. This can be no time or a year or longer, yet Acknowledgement and Accountability must occur, and the violator is only able to be considered for re-entry to The Lost Places events if they take all the steps outlined in this document and in their Incident and Restorative Justice Report.

Standard Actions Required for Restoration

  1. Complete a course related to the offense and provide proof of completion. Offender will be responsible for any associated costs. The Lost Places senior team must approve of the course chosen and/or can assist in determining an appropriate course. In some cases counseling or therapy will be required.

  2. Provide 2-3 character statements, specific to the work done to improve behaviors related to the offense. Contact information must be provided.

  3. Have a review with one or more members of The Lost Places senior team to discuss the matter, and any additional considerations for restoration and re-entry.

Additional Offenses

If the violator commits an additional offense, it is highly likely that the offender will be permanently banned from The Lost Places Events, though the Senior Team will determine on a case by case basis if this is the case and they may decide to apply the Restorative Justice Process again.

An Incident Report will be created and the Senior Team will decide if it will be submitted to the Safety & Security Committee for review, and likely will for severe cases and individuals who have been permanently banned.
